550 Wheels

Post by roymck »

Just bought a M&W 550 Spyder that I have known about for many years and it's been parked up for 8 yrs in dry storage . It has 944 brakes on the front with Porsche Fuch wheels . I want to change to wide 5 Wheels . Is it going to be easier to replace the front brakes and hubs completely to something like CSP ?
What should M&W normally have , is it 1302 or 1303 front uprights , so what fits and would give me wide 5 hubs and discs .

Thanks Roy

Hi Roy

I am no expert but I can start the ball rolling. The M & W is based around a 1302, the front suspension is modified to take a mini top joint which I guess will be the way yours is set up. The rear is easy as you just need a wide 5 drum but try and get one that does not need spacers. They are available from CSP or Paruzzi http://www.paruzzi.com/uk/beetle/brakes ... rums/3142/

The front is not quite as easy, CSP do the best kit but pricey and you will need to find a pair of 1302 drum brake spindles as they wont fit onto the disc brake spindles. They are available from CSP or their agents in the UK Machine 7. The whole conversion will cost you just over £1000 not including spindles and rear refubishment. You could do the front with drums at a lower price as most beetle drums seem to fit, this will be about half the price. I guess depending on the Fuchs that are fitted you might be able to sell them and offset the cost. The rims are availble at most VW shops for about £80 each. Then to make it look right you will need drum skins which are about £125 a set.

Hope this helps, the experts will be along soon.

Barry you've nailed it.

Or if no budget, use wheel adapters from Porsche to wide 5. These will widen the track an inch each side at the most. Not a good look if your planning to use without hubcaps to hide behind.

Has Barry said sell the 944 set up and fuch's to fund it.

We all like pictures ;-)

Hi

Barry nailed it. Exactly what i did. If you did go drums you can cover a lot of sins with the drumskins. I went discs and don't regret it.....save from the dough. :(

If you call CSP I think the fella to ask for is Gunter. Just explain your requirment. All the best. Ant.

Many thanks all for the replies, gives me something to think about. In the meantime might just get out and use it. Will post some pics in a while. Just to say it's got a 914 engine and box taken out to 2.3 with 45 carbs, horizontal fan kit etc .

Thanks Roy

Looks like a nice example. Shame it was locked away for the last 8 years Roy. What's the story behind it.

So what's the story. The car was taken out to Spain about 8 years ago by a close friend of mine. He used it out there on club runs etc until the MOT run out then tried to register it on Spanish plates. Unfortunately he was unable to as it was a bit oddball and after trying for about 2 years he gave up. The Spanish don't like modified or non standard cars. So it just sat in his underground garage and was sneaked out occasionally for a discrete run out. In the meantime he sold his house in the UK so he was stuck with a UK registered car and no way of using it or disposing of it in Spain. So the deal is the car V5 is now in my name and the car is back from Spain. I am giving it a full check over and then getting it
mot,d.
The intention will be to sell it and pass the funds back to the last owner as he could see no other way of getting rid of it.
So if anybody is interested then make an offer.

The spec is 914 engine with 103 mm barrels and J&E pistons giving with the 71 mm throw crank 2366 cc. All engine has been balanced. Webcam 86B camshaft. 41mm inlet and 38 mm stainless exhaust
valves. Twin 45 DRLA Dellorto carbs on BAS short stack manifolds. Hall horizontal fan kit. 009 distributor with Lumenition ignition. BAS Thermostatic oil valve and remote oil cooler.
Gearbox is a side shifter 914 box.
Steering has a quick rack with 944 front discs. 16 X 6 fuch alloys.

Yes it is confusing and should have worded it better but it was a problem that had to be solved to get the V5 in my name. Was wondering if the Porche Fuch wheels may put people off and it would be better with wide 5 wheels ?

Check my Pre-A project here on Replicas. I fit widefive discbrakes to 1302 spindles and uses VW Polo calipers with adapter. ;)
