IVA interior roll bar protection?

Post by greg356a »

The dot gov website say no to roll bar protection as below;

I have similar issue with mine, thought large radius would be ok, apparently not.

Not sure what the real problem is, maybe the temporary nature of the tie clips and pipe cladding.

So any sensible solutions for suitable protection? Ideally off the shelf?

cheers

I would think its the "pipe lagging" rather than tie wraps - all the FIA approved (non bonded type) roll bar padding is designed specifically to be held on with tie wraps, and its even written into their (safety devices, lifeline, etc) instructions to install it in that way

Pipe lagging is generally very soft and basically doesn't do anything, and so I expect that's what they're getting at - proper FIA stuff is hard (needs a hacksaw to cut it). Admittedly its designed to cope with an impact with a helmet rather than a bare head, but the MSA stuff (which is kind of clubman/trackday stuff) is much stiffer than pipe lagging also, and presumably designed to be a bit more road-friendly (ie bare heads)

Should probably add, Demontweeks, JJC Race and Rally, Merlin Motorsport, etc. all have suitable padding available (at a huge range of price points :lol: )

***EDIT***

I was intrigued, did a search, and came up with this..

"a recognised car interior material or the Foam covered in a proper finish"

..BUT I also came up with a rule that says it only needs padding if its under 25mm diameter?
Might be worth doing a bit of reading on a few kit car forums to see what the general consensus is (found the above on the locost forum)

Might be worth giving your local IVA test centre a call and discuss the requirements. They are they're to help and advise.
