Which post-'74 aircooled to buy for driving and collecting?
Hi,
I am thinking about getting another toy with more bhp than my 73 2,4T. First was dreaming about an S, but they are beyond the budget.
Which car:
So the question is which more modern aircooled model should I go for? My criteria are
1) 'Collectability' (for personal joy as well as economic considerations)
2) Price or shall I say value for money
Are there any cars to specifically consider (e.g. Japan models given the very low numbers produced etc.)...
I am currently thinking 911 3.2 (ideally grand prix white sunroof full leather bordeaux red below 100k miles (if I can find one . Or rather 964?
Finding 'the' car:
I am looking for a LHD. Any pointers welcome. Has anyone delt with Dutch importers (usually selling US or Canada cars) and knows a trusted classic Porsche expert in Holland who could do a PPI should I find a fitting vehicle with one of those guys?
thanks for your thoughts!

964 C2 or C4 manual
Re: Which post-'74 aircooled to buy for driving and collecti
ignore the £'s as that is not a way to happiness or fullfillment
decide what you want out of the car & more importantly what do you actually lust over ?
Easy one for me, I've always wanted a 964 . LHD C2 manual with mild mods is pretty much my favorite 911 ( 964RS is my ultimate of the 'modern' cars)
Where as 74-89 IB cars don't really do it for me
... so best to choose what you want 1st ... buy any one them right and you shoudnt loose any money over & above running costs

Thanks to both of you.
Very interesting: Why do you both favor the 964 - is it so much more fun to drive / is it a "better" classic car / do they have less technical problems etc etc or rather a matter of your taste?
Any insights are really valuable for me...

I've had a few of the post 74 cars (SC, 3.2, 964, 964RS, 993) and I would agree the 964 is very good. The SC and 3.2 feel a bit more lazy to drive, mainly due to the power delivery and less sporting. The 964 RS is epic on the right road or track but sweet spot is smaller (plus the prices are a lot higher). I was never a big fan of the 993s looks but I have to admit, it is probably one of the best all 'round drivers 911s at the moment. I am continually impressed by how good they are to drive in a wide variety of circumstances.
Main thing is to find a nice one that has been well serviced and is rust free. Every one wants a C2 Coupe so they are hard to find. If you find a good 964 or 993, can't see you going too far wrong in terms of driving experience, ownership and a reasonably safe place to put your money.
If you are looking for a limited production model, there are a few of them including the RS versions. All very nice but hard to argue with he value of a basic car if you want to drive it.
Go and look at a few and make your own mind up.

The force is strong in this one ......

My 74 US Spec Carrera - has everything except the power of a'73 RS / '74 MFI Carrera - but I'm addressing that! IMO still very undervalued at the mo. '73RS chassis, brakes, transmission wheels 1075kgs - only let down by a 175bhp engine - easy to get 240bhp and have a real drivers car. Also love the 964 RS reps or modded cars - classy.

Re: Which post-'74 aircooled to buy for driving and collecti
I've got a US 1977 which I imported with a V8 in the back but has just had a 1988 3.2 installed.
I sold the V8 and have just got it back from my mechanic who did the swap and its lovely to drive, I think the 3.2 is a bit more of a 'GT' type engine, although mine is a US spec, so de-tuned compared to a European. I think I'm right in saying that the '77' was the last year of the narrow body cars and the first year of galvanised tubs, so the best of both worlds.

Carrera 3.0 '75-'77
200 bhp, more power than its successor, more torque than a 74 MFI, less than half the price; different to drive but doesn't need as many revs. Get a UK sport package version with upgraded seats, shocks and spoilers. Rare, under-rated and can be had for reasonable money. Same cases as the 3.0 Turbo...
