And thanks for blazing the trail, Darren - I have benefitted from your and Barry's experience... one of the things he looked at when he came to survey my project was that rear slam panel.
Looking at the curve (same as the bit you've focused on in your post), we thought mine was correct / original.
But now Mike mentions it the sticker recesses look different on mine.
What do you reckon from the pic below?

True......but then it's also a 72 shell so deserves to look like it started as one!

In all honesty I did wonder whether to bother although with Barry now producing backdate panels it means putting it through the bodyshop is an easy fix.

I posted to help inform others......as you know I've never worried about looking like a plonker!

Yours is correct and (most likely) original Richard (hope you're well BTW ). The tooling for the modification panels were made directly from an original panel, so can't help but be a good match.

As I mentioned to Darren, the rear slam panel is I think the thinnest panel on the whole car, so placing these parts and welding them in takes a little patience. If Darren doesn't mind, I'll take some pics of a pair I've just put onto a car, which remains in bare metal. The effect is quite authentic.

As Darren mentioned, there seems to be more and more to do in the backdate department these days, as once something gets spotted you just have to do it. It just niggles otherwise . I must have a count up of all of them, must be 20-30 at least.

These are very closely related chassis numbers.

There is a very similar discussion on the early S just now about the subtle differences in the FRONT slam panel over the years regarding the drain holes. Do you want the link Sladey?

With a restoration just about to start it makes sense to try and get these things sorted out now.

There is a rumour doing the rounds that the material was originally under spec to what was ordered and paid for (by the taxpayer) and that maintainence was postponed over the years all to save a few quid.
It always comes back to bite you.........
