Go Pro ideas

Post by sjm »

Hi all - I'm off to Le Mans next month in the 68T and would like to capture some of the drive on a GoPro (or similar). Does anyone have any views on best models etc. please? I doubt I need all the bells and whistles as I just want to get some decent in car filming and a sensible way to mount it.

Many thanks in advance.

I have the Hero 3 black edition, not the cheapest option but I got it from a guy at work and negotiated a good deal. I have the LCD screen which makes it easier to see what you are filming, I also have the Go-pro suction cup which does exactly what it says on the tin !

The LCD screen eats through the battery life, but even without it the battery life is not great. I ordered 4 generic batteries from ebay ( 20 quid, including a charger) which I numbered and use in rotation, charging of an evening in the hotel.

Here are afew films I have made with my setup, super easy to piece together in i-movie etc

Hi Simon

I know it no use to you, but these are available in France from our local discount store. Maybe they are available in the UK. They range from cheap and cheerful for use once during your holidays to the better quality for continued use when on the way to work.

I use a "muvi" camera ( when I can be arsed) its cheaper than a go pro by miles and go outdoors sell all the mounts and stuff anyone could want.

Works for me !

The GoPro app for smartphones is great to preview your shot and also great to use as a camera monitor when filming by hand - works the same as the LCD screen but at no cost.

That's great - many thanks! Love those clips - very good! I'm even wondering if I might hire a couple for a few days, then I can have two angles covered at the same time of course. Really good clips though - like that a lot! The car looks great too! :)

I bought a Garmin Verb when they were on special on Sportspursuit. I have a GoPro which I bought last year to go cycling in France with, its a hideous big block of a thing on the front of your bike, less of an issue in a car I guess, but the Virb is brilliant, sleek and looks like it was built all in one as opposed to being built by a guy that knew the best way to make money was to design something that needed a million add ons that you had to buy.

The Virb is being usurped by a new model so you can find them cheap, I paid £80 for mine, it is absolutely first rate, much, much easier to use than my GoPro which was designed by a person with tiny metal digits to press the buttons. You can pick them up for not a lot.

THAT is a bargain. IMHO much better than a GoPro and heaps cheaper

Ironically I had some issues with my Go-Pro yesterday, it would only record to 6 seconds...Had to update the software which was straight forward, now all is ok and has actually extended the battery life.

i put the self adhesive mount just in front of the windscreen

with the go pro set to wide angle / fish eye this produced some fun images that include the front wings and bonnet...
