Renault 5 Turbo2
I've been threatening to put together a bit of a thread on my journey with my R5T2 so I thought I'd make something of a start. It's probably going to be a rambling, shambolic and fragmented account, but to give some context...
Last year I put my 2.7RS rep up for sale. It was a more agonising "shall I, shan't I?" decision than I could possibly have imagined for a mere scruffy old car. I had owned it for 5 years and I loved it. It ticked so many boxes for me - great track car with a great soundtrack, bearable long distance cruiser (with earplugs and regular stops to stretch my back and legs!), sometime race car and highlight of the school run for my daughters. It was well set up for me and I learnt how to drive it up to the limit of my ability. I'd never claim to be an expert driver but I had a few good results in VSCC events, really got to understand the rear engined, RWD layout and it brought me some fantastic memories and experiences.
It wasn't a car I could sneak out in - the residual combined smell of exhaust, oil and petrol put paid to that. Most people loved it...some thought it was 'just' any old 911 and some didn't like it at all. But in Chartreuse, everyone noticed it.
And then there were the people that my 911 ownership introduced me to...Neil Bainbridge was an inspiration and has become a great friend, DDK became an almost Pavlovian website click (a habit I just can't kick in my post-Porsche wilderness years!), and the friendly community of early 911 fans, enthusiasts and experts made ownership a real pleasure.
So why the hell sell it? I saw plenty of posts on here from people in the same position and I felt their pain! For me I just realised it was time for a new experience. I've never really seen myself as a single marque kind of guy and felt that I had done everything in the car that I wanted to do - and life's too short. I'm not an investor so shoving it in a garage under a sheet has never been an option so it was time to move on.
And then it was gone - bought by another DDK to begin its life anew. I met Andrew at BS Motorsport to say goodbye...
To be honest, I don't think there's a day goes by without me wondering whether I will regret it.
But luckily, whilst the car was up for sale, I'd been mentally spending the money so when the time came, I knew what I was looking for...
There you go...the first post on the Renault 5 Turbo2 and not a single one in sight yet...

Good thread so far. It's all about classic Porsche.

waiting for the turbo2 bit now
... I've always wanted / loved a Turbo2, ever since going on holiday to France as a kid ( eurocamping ) . Remember seeing a white turbo2 , I think in Sarlat, back when they were newish. We'd driven down in a Volvo 240GLT estate & the turbo2 was pure french car porn. Can stil picture its rear end now. Bought a machbox toy version to keep me happy

Don't mock French Porn - my taste of it during school French Exchanges (with an all girls school in Rouen) helped shape my future.

Re: Renault 5 Turbo2
Saw a lovely Turbo2 at Bosworth water park classic car meet Tuesday night. Sounded lovely as it left ( with a 911 and an Escort Mexico also both very nice)

Re: Renault 5 Turbo2
There's a lot of love for the R5T2 in Porsche circles isn't there?
It's no surprise really - it's surprisingly similar to the RS when you think about it
A bedroom poster car for a 17 year old - Check
Designed by motorsport enthusiasts and engineers - Check
Marketing men and accountants kept out of the room- thankfully
Homologated for racing - Check
Totally focussed on achieving motorsport success - Check
RWD - Oh yes
Spine tingling noise - definitely
Converted for the road - yep
An unexpected success with the public - Check
Values that have become out of reach for us mere mortals - hang on a minute, no!
Anyway, having decided on the T2, I spent a long time looking around at cars in the UK and Europe.
I met up numerous times with John Price Rally in Hereford - John has won more tarmac rally championships in UK and Europe than anyone else - and always in R5 and Metro 6R4 - and there aren't many T2's out there that he hasn't worked on. He really helped me define what I was looking for (a track/road/hillclimb car)...and hearing his 6R4 rev to 11,000 Rpm was a highlight of my visits..
I tried to buy this one -a nice Turbo 1 but ultimately too rally focussed and not quite what I was looking for...and the vendor decided not to sell in the end...
I looked at this one
Not the one for me - I realised that a standard road car really wasn't going to cut it and it had been poorly resprayed from red to blue (a great colour to be honest). And it had a few other issues that made me walk away. I went to auctions, spoke to dealers in France and Holland but nothing was quite right.
Then my mate Mark Dixon at Octane sent me a little article about a car for sale in Germany.
I was a little bit hooked. And with the exchange rate as it was, it would have been rude not to...
Next stop Dresden. (more 911 content to come, Paul)

The car looks fabulous - especially that side profile ...
