I'm lucky that there's not much I need to run past my wife to get an OK.......in fact, although there's not much I could get past her if she chose to take an interest, the reality is she doesn't really care and allows me to get on with things.
I repay that trust by only doing things that I believe are 'right'....
......with my projects that means doing the things that maintains what I'm trying to achieve whilst being pragmatic!
Although very much on my 'wish list' the one thing I thought I'd stay clear of, at least until after my car is complete, is rally equipment.....no doubt highly desirable although essentially expensive jewellery that I found hard to justify and not strictly needed.
Alas, one drunken evening sat in front of Ebay 'I slipped' and purchased a sensibly priced plastic cased Heuer Monte-Carlo, the rationale being that I could find a matching Master-Time to complete a pair at a fraction of the price of a matched Rally-Master set......the slope I was on sure was slippery and the Monte was quickly joined by a Halda Twinmaster, map lights, cables and T-gears!
The plastic cased Heuer Master-Time however proved to be more elusive and after a period of 6 weeks or so my wife enquired why night after night I spent all my time looking at stopwatches on eBay?........sheepishly I explained my desire and my 'sensible' solution.......her reply was that I'd given her no indication what I wanted for my forthcoming landmark birthday and a matched Rally-Master set would make a fitting gift!
A short time later she purchased these

......
.....I opened the clocks once they arrived and it would appear they were never removed from their mounting plate, inside the movements look brand new. My wife has now hidden these away squirrel like to be wrapped and opened in a couple of months time.
After purchase the German seller informed me that the clocks belonged to his late 93-year old Grandfather who raced extensively during his lifetime and had owned the clocks from new. A little research into his Grandfathers name highlighted the races he entered and who he competed against including a certain Walter Röhrl....one 1972 document highlighted a mass of racing 911S's however that would have been too much icing and these clocks were fitted to a BMW 2002ti...still pretty cool...
....a pretty special gift from a woman I've been with for over 30 years since my teens

....
....the clocks will help complete my 'ideal' Hot Rod and I think it'll end up pretty damn cool.......
.....but then it'll never, ever be anywhere near as cool as my wife!
Cheers,
