Speedster engine lid catch - help

Post by greg356a »

Hi,
I need some ideas for a engine lid catch. The usual style will most likely foul on the 911 engine fan.

So need to fit something to the side or back?

I guess IVA would kick out a nice set of rear belts?

Cheers

You could always convert the fan from upright to horizontal, will give you more room for working in the engine. Here's a Speedster with that conversion.

On a serious note though, l reckon you would get away with a couple of belt buckles. They'd fall under the 40-50mm exteria threshold. Only problem you'd have is to get the correct rubber seal. So the lid sits flat with the body as the buckles won't compress the lid into the rubber as a latch would.

I'm running mine without a latch at the moment without any problems. I'm passing the local IVA test station all this week. If l finish early one day I'll drop in and the question for you.

Hi Rich,

Love the engine fan layout but not in my budget. I wondered about hiding D-suz fasteners under the belts to get the compression, interesting to see if the inspector would allow the belt. I will keep my fingers crossed. :)

could even use this key fob ?
coz to open & lift lid at same time would be an issue   unless youve got very long arms  or a snooker que :?

If you wanted you could have door locks & immobilizer on same fob ?

Greg
Dropped in this morning to the IVA centre and asked if you can use a couple of belts with buckles.

Actually spoke tithe guy who did mine, his comments were you can use what you like to lock the boot as long as it's secure and don't protrude less than 5mm from the body without any sharp edges. If it's more than 5mm then it needs to have a radius of 2.5mm.

Best get looking in the wardrobe for some old belts ;-)

Great help - thanks

Found a smaller magnetic lock on ebay from same company which should fit. Wondered about how to add any tension to the engine lid to fit flush, maybe use a threaded stop set into the lip so when the magnet engages it holds the the lid in the right place to the surrounding body work then use the belts for the look! As you say Oliver I will need to use a key fob to disengage and lift at the same time. :)
