Think you have answered your own question.

The problem I have when thinking about selling the 911 is what else does everything I need/want.

Keep it and buy something cheap to play with for track days etc

It's exactly this thought process that's going to put the brakes on the market. At some point everyone has to consider what that beloved lump of metal in the garage is worth and what they could otherwise do with the cash. Lots of very nice cars seem to be coming to auction for the first time in decades at the moment.

thing is , deep down I don't want to sell it and if the value 'forces' me to sell it that inevitably will lead to regret in the future .... anyway, feeling more positive today :)

Maybe the CSL should go

Where did you source your CSL, James? I've been trying to organise a test drive through Munich Legends but they tend to sell them quicker than I can drive down there!

privately through the CSL forum.

Mines not a collectors level car as its had quite a few owners( last 4 CSL club members) , its 65K miles with full history & been fully warrantied since new so its been well looked after ( also had the boot floor done along with new cylinder head cams etc under warrenty when the VANOS packed in for a previous owner ).

They're great cars, but not for everyone. You need to have access to driving roads . Early owners of my car only kept it for 12 months , but they were based in towns / cities & TBH it would annoy me if driving there. Its a car that only now people are realising what it is & its finally becoming a 'toy' . Think you'll now find more & more will land into long term ownership.

I love it , it gets more playful the quicker you're going. Gearbox is aggressive & the suspension pretty firm , better on B-roads than a GT3 though. Kids can fit in the back & with the seats down the load area is huge.

Also, as to most people it looks like an old grey BMW, I can use it for business where a Rangy ( even if its an old one) might look a bit flash

My wife hates it  , but she can understand why us blokes love them

Your welcome to have a drive if you're up in Yorkshire at any time :)

other suggestions of classic cars ...

I've considered loads over the years & now the only ones I'd actually want are :

Early Land Rovers, S1 & S2

Citreon 2CV's

Big Healeys

Original Mini Coopers

Escort Mk1's

BMW 2002's

ALL aircooled Porsche ... quite like the idea of a 2.4E Targa

How about a Lancia Aurelia B20 GT....

Wonderful cars, eligible for Mille Miglia, Lord March has one...I nearly bought one before buying the 356 and on the day of the inspection the seller's builder drove into the front of it in his pick-up.....I was slightly gutted.

Like I said earlier sell and experience something else in your garage. Porsche is great but variety is always better.

Thanks James - a generous offer. I've had an itch for one for a few years but won't know for sure until I've done a few miles behind the wheel. The SMG could easily be the deal breaker however as I just can't imagine it being involving enough and I'm hankering after a manual after my Tiptronic Turbo error! I've been trying to locate a 996 GT3 (after dismissing a GT2) but there are so few around... Am even considering a 997 GT3.

I sold my CSL a while back. No regrets.
I bought it when I only had room for one car. It was great in that context, did it all, but IMHO it's not far enough from a "normal" fast-ish BMW to be a proper toy.

If you're uncertain, I'd definitely try the SMG for a good while before committing to a purchase.

My view (based on experience - I think I had my CSL for 4 years) - the SMG is really bad, but not quite bad enough to ruin a very good car.
It would have been so much better with a manual box. Mind you I say that about every car, and before the M5 had a '13 535i touring with a manual. I received a few phone calls from BMW along the way in the planning->build process, assuming I had made a mistake when ordering.

You may already have done this but the only way really to get a 996gt3 currently I to get ahead if the rest. Cars sell in re grey market before being advertised. I'd suggest you make friends with 911 virgin, Jzm and the few other specialists an be prepared to pounce as soon as one comes up. I have had quite a few pms via pistonheads where buyers have been trawling the forums for owners and contacting them speculatively. I also have a neighbour who gave up and bought a 997 gt3 instead. Nothing wrong with that, but one step away from purity is the argument.

I've been whizzing round the Cotswolds in mine this week - it really is an amazing lump if metal for 10yrs old. More likely to be a keeper than the 'S' I think as it can deliver everything everywhere- B road blast to track day hero.

Back on topic, I sympathise with the OP dilemma and am having similar thoughts. I have too many cars and too little time, and, the desire or need to keep them all tip top is a little all consuming. For example, my Honda NSX has not turned a wheel in 6 mths. I have been toying with the notion of rolling everything into a Carrera GT but as they are now trading at 300k may be well above my station. If course if I can sell the S for 200 it a different matter!! I don't think I have enough driving memories of the car yet to part with it though I do think variety is the spice of life, as long as it has 3 pedals.

My thoughts would be:
(a) keep the 911;and
(b) buy this
