Hi Torque Starter for G50 Advice

Post by pete917 »

I need to replace my starter motor and would like to install a light weight Hi Torque alternative. I'm running a G50/00 with a 3.2 engine. Has anyone done a similar upgrade or can recommend a good manufacturer for a Hi Torque starter motor?

Many thanks

I have no experience with a G50-equipped 911 but I've fitted a high torque starter to most of the early 911's I've owned (plus my 904 replica) & have been very happy with this supplier:

Original Bosch! do not try the light weight unit, I almost broke my engine with a UK produced light weight starter, back to Robert BOSCH
The clutch housing an gearbox does not look to god after the 9 tooth wheel came loos.

Had no problems with mine - an edge one - supplied by autofarm IIRC

OK, so I have narrowed it down to two units, one by race mettle and the other

Race Mettle unit £330+vat
http://www.racemettleltd.co.uk/p.html

Auto Electric unit £170

Edge don't seem to do them for the G50 and WOSP are still under development. So aside from the obvious price difference, what else is different between the two units?

You have 2 recommendations from 2 who actually have the starters in their cars for more than a year.

Because it is expensive it is not necessarily better.

Yeah I saw that. I have a G50 and I have been told that Edge dont do one for the G50. If I am wrong please let me know as I have heard good things about the edge stater motors. I contacted cambridge motorsports and they said the endge units were just for the 915 box.

Speak to autofarm about it. IIRC it's not as simple as G50 or not - I think they are OK up to 89 (I.e. IB cars) - maybe edge associate G50 with 964s. In any event I've got an edge one and it definitely works on my G50. Have a word with autofarm - they weren't any more expensive that anywhere else. I ordered it from them on the basis that I was getting conflicting information and if they were prepared to say it fit I could send it back if it didn't. It fitted fine. I think I put details of the install in my restoration thread

Just called Autofarm. They confirmed that even though Edge say they don't fit a G50, they actually do. I think I'll go for the edge unit.

Remember to adjust your ride height down a touch with the weight saving....

I have a Brize epicyclic high torque starter on my Lola Porsche race car, smaller and lighter than any, but no longer available.

I think you have made a good decision. :)
