The drivers side was a little less crusty and more of a standard Kidney bowl replacement exercise.

The lower section of the rear quarter needs to be removed to allow proper access.

Some rot in behind the Kidney is dealt with

Before fitting the new panel

And protecting it well

Removed section put back exactly where it was with the aid of the previously marked lines.

Years of practice Darren.

Next step to remove all the paint from the rest of the panels, all done by hand with paint stripper first then a sanding disc.

Image

Image

After prep a black primer is used as it shows up any blemishes more easily.

Image

Image

Image

This is then sanded down with 120 then 400 dry

Image

and any panels joins sealed as the original sealer would have bee removed in the paint stripping process.

Image

Image

Image

Inner wings and under wings coated with sealer.

And the valances, sill covers coated as per the factory.

Finally another 3 coats of 2K primer, in this case as the car is silver a light grey is used, but if it were a darker colour black primer would be used again or beige in the case of a light yellow car I've just done.

This is wet flatted ready for colour coat.

Image

and a final check on panel gaps (although its a bit late now!)

So whilst the shell is getting painted plenty of time to recondition the suspension components.

That was quite an up-date!
Looks good.
Poly bushes or what in the suspension?

Often asked question think, but why is the huge hole at the base of the A post/sill left open?
I welded a cover over mine to stop salty water running into the inner/outer sill. The bases of my A posts were missing from corrosion when I got my car, so never saw the factory design way back, but mine was in a very bad shape in '88, shocking corrosion for a 15 year old car (from Germany).

Great thread. :cyclops:

Yes super pro bushes used on the suspension.

The bottom of the A post closes off the front of the sill so no water should get in, there is a large drain hole at the bottom of the wing closing panel, which like all drain holes should be checked and cleared as part of regular servicing.

Being an '89 model this car was fitted from the factory with 6x16 and 8x16 which have been restored courtesy of Nick Moss.
