1973 911E RHD Light Ivory and ex NZ...another one.

1973 911E RHD Light Ivory and ex NZ...another one.
1. Pre-purchase history, original specification and restoration preamble.
I bought my car in November from a nice chap in New Zealand.
Original specification:
911E manual
RHD
Chassis No; 9113200833
Engine No; 6231261
Gearbox; 337140
Light ivory
Black interior - Pepita inlays
Produced on 2nd February 1973.
Imported by AFN UK in March 1973.
Selling dealer was Rob Walker.
Supplied with the following options;
G20 - 6 x 15" alloy wheels (400), stabilizer front/rear 15mm (404), drivers side mirror (423), chrome trim on wing edges (426).
470 - comfort equipment.
568 - tinted windows.
651 - electric windows.
409 - sports seats.
425 - rear wiper.
650 - electric sunroof.
At the moment I don't have any history for it from the date of first registration (Sept. 1973) to May 1985, but I may be able to get this from DVLA when I've got it MOT'd. In 1986 it was exported to New Zealand and used for daily transport.
A couple of pictures before it was shipped to New Zealand.
In the early 1990's it changed hands and was prepared for rallying and was used for this purpose for a number of years.
The guy I bought it from acquired it well after its rallying days were over and embarked upon a full restoration. He got much of the bodywork done and it is encouraging to see pictures of it mounted on a jig.
Traditional Moari headdress?
So after studying the photographs and a couple of 'phone conversations with the owner we struck a deal and I bought the car .. I can't repeat what my wife said when I told her I'd sent a load of dosh to a guy New Zealand, whom I'd never met, for a car I'd not seen that would be arriving in bits. In essence she wanted to know why I couldn't find one in the UK or at least a little closer to home. I just couldn't make her understand why it was so much more exciting this way...
However, I was a little apprehensive about the importation/shipping documentation but I used Kingstown Shipping in Hull and they were excellent.
On the 30th November (my birthday) AH (the previous owner) loaded the container and waved goodbye to his project.
A long journey ahead.
The container arrived in Felixstowe on 7th January and I made the short trip to the port to collect it. Obviously I was keen to see how well it had survived the journey although I hadn't bothered with any accidental damage insurance, I'd only arranged cover for a total loss.
Curious and very helpful cargo handlers.
Loaded up ready for the last leg of the journey.
First job was to get the engine checked over. I knew it was the original but didn't know what condition it was in, so I loaded up all the boxes and headed to Brackley to see Nick Fulljames.
After a nervous hour or so Nick declared the engine to be in very good condition.
Case halves both good.
Crankshaft has never been ground.
Most other parts are reusable but Nick will fit new pistons. I left the engine at Redtek and Nick is going to do a full, standard rebuild with the usual sensible mods incorporated.
So that's my restoration thread up and running, more updates will follow.
Kieron.

I've been looking forward to this one Kieron and hearing about your previous projects I know this is going to be one very special restoration
Wonderful specification and colour, and being an E you're lucky to have the rarest and best of the bunch!
Very best of luck with your journey and enjoy the ride.
Cheers,

My car may have left NZ before yours but my money is on you completing your restoration first!
Given it is only £5 I suggest completing a V888 now rather than waiting until you get an MOT. I know you can't register the car yet but there would be no harm in asking for the previous history now.
Best of luck with the restoration and I look forward to seeing your updates.

Re: 1973 911E RHD Light Ivory and ex NZ...another one.
Great history... I'm fully involved in my restoration, dismantling my 911T 2,2 1970... I think to understand the obsession that involve who choose to follow the re-birth of these cars, buying them somewhere, from somebody and to rebuild them step by step

2. More reference images
A few more 'before' reference shots taken on the day Barry was visiting for a prod and a poke. Luckily I'd spoken to Barry in November when I bought the car and booked a slot with him.
Front bumper is wrong for this car and the correct one will be added to the growing list of parts.
Battery boxes have been repaired but will come out, as will the new tank support.
When I was pushing the car around I did wonder why the forward wishbone locations weren't fixed in place, then when I got up close I found out...
Nothing that can't be fixed of course and we'll get the full picture when it's on Barry's jig.

3. Barry Carter - assessment, inspection and parts list.
So Barry came over and gave me a full assessment of what he thought was needed. I'd hoped the work already done could be 'signed-off' but alas despite pictures of it mounted on a jig all the previous work will have to come out and be done again. On balance though not too bad and I think BC described it as 'a tricky mixture: much of it is very good indeed, but there are quite a few elements that are definitely going to be a challenge'.
The list of parts finished up as ...
Front slam panel.
Front inner wing quarter n/s.
Front inner wing quarter o/s.
Front suspension pan long.
Front suspension pan reinforcement.
Front fuel tank support.
Washer bottle mounting.
Both battery boxes.
Front bumper 'S' version.
Front wing closer n/s.
Front wing closer o/s.
Front outer wing o/s.
Screen corner repair n/s.
Screen corner repair o/s.
Door skin n/s.
Door skin o/s.
Inner sill n/s.
Inner sill o/s.
Jacking point reinforcement.
Jacket point socket.
Outer sill n/s.
Outer sill o/s.
Both kidney bowls.
Rear floor section.
B post trim holder n/s.
B post trim holder o/s.
Rear wing outer o/s.
Rear wing outer n/s.
Front wing seal.
And here is a picture of the parts being assembled at Glasgow OPC prior to despatch, and ignoring the cost for a moment an oddly satisfying image. Glasgow OPC has been excellent to deal with and I can't recommend them highly enough.
The shell will go down to Barry in early Spring and I need to get on with all the other stuff so assembly can commence as soon as it's back. When I spoke to Barry in November last year I remember being mildly disappointed that he couldn't fit me in any earlier. When I think now that it's already mid July I'm not sure I'll have everything ready.

Not that is a big list of parts! Good luck and well done for getting on Barry list early. I understand it's now closed and very long!

Re: 1973 911E RHD Light Ivory and ex NZ...another one.
4.Removal of front struts and steering rack.
Previous owner had loosely bolted on the running gear so it could be pushed around. Taking it apart was a fairly clean and simple process compared to some I've seen in threads on here.
Struts had been uprated to 1989 units presumably when it was used for rallying.
One of the top seal collars was u/s but a replacement was kindly donated by fellow DDK'er Jonny Hart who happened to have a spare.
Pad sensor lugs were removed and paint stripped. The units went off to Dave Masters at Bilstein who put new bearings in the struts, rebuilt the inserts and reassembled.
Hubs weren't in particularly good shape so I've sourced a couple of later ones.
Interestingly the uprated calipers are quite rare 'S' units and discussed separately here...

5. Injection pump.
Injection pump has been away for rebuild...a couple of before and after pictures.
Have received nearly all the panels ordered on Porsche except I'm having difficulty with the n/s rear quarter. The wrong one has been sent twice, revised delivery is now mid November ...anyone else experiencing problems?

Hi Kieron, hows it going? Who have supplied your panels and which have you purchased?

Re: 1973 911E RHD Light Ivory and ex NZ...another one.
Hi Adam - thread update is long overdue so I'll add something this week. I've got all the panels I need (see list in my thread) except the rear quarter which is due about now. The panels are all stored at Porsche Glasgow and will go direct to Barry when the car goes to him. The service from Danny at OPC Glasgow has been excellent and I can definately recommend them/him if you decide to go for Porsche parts.
I'm following your thread and am still keeping a look out for a solution to your seat problem as I had a similar issue which I've almost resolved.
