Shipping items from the USA, does the 5% import charge, and no VAT on cars 30 years and over, also apply if you purchase an engine of the same age?
Thanks in advance,

Re: import charges
If you can get it shipped inside someone else's or your own car you'll pay no tax at all, not that that was your question. Try googling BTI classification, there's a helpline number based in Essex, Southend I believe.

Re: import charges
Trying to understand import duties and VAT this week I phoned the Tariff Classification Service advice line on 01702 366077 option 2 - don't try in a morning as they only answer the phone from 1 to 5. They can advise the classification code and therefore what VAT applies. Alternatively check out https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff
My understanding is 5% VAT only applies to classic cars and not just parts. The cars with 5% get a classification of 9705000090.

Re: import charges
Thanks lads.
Has anybody imported an engine over thirty years old,(proof of manufacture from engine number), from the USA, and if so, was VAT charged?

Re: import charges
I think you will have to pay the full VAT amount on any car parts.
The 5% VAT duty is a consession on cars of historic interest over 30 years old, in unmodified condition.
