The struts were original to the car but would benefit from an overhaul.

They would require a bit of work from the guys at Early911.

I've bought fresh shock absorbers from Bilstein.
They are standard 'sport' spec to maintain the original ride & performance.

Oh dear - the paint quality on that press really lets the picture down - I think Nick needs to restore the garage, or photoshop the equipment :-)

Did you have to replace the bushings inside the front struts ?

It's all new Ian. I could have had the old inserts reconditioned but it wasn't a great deal more to buy new units from Bilstein.
Oh and, I'll be sure and tell Nick to smarten up his equipment.
Mind you, I think it's quite neat & tidy down at Early911 these days. They still don't seem to serve coffee though.

It's fair to say there's not much on the car that isn't being restored, rebuilt or replaced.
But I did say at the outset that I felt the best way to restore a car was to strip to a bare shell, repaint and then bolt everything back on taking care to make sure each part is as good as new.

However, I concede I'm getting carried away. The restoration is more thorough and more expensive than I'd intended but you get to thinking I can't just let that go, I should restore it before installing.
And that is never more so than when it affects the driving dynamics.
I can forgive a sticker that doesn't have quite the right font but if the steering is loose and wooly then why bother?

Nick removed the steering column and checked the components for any wear or play.
It was decided that both bearings would need replacing.

So I bought both top & bottom bearings new. They are Porsche parts (one made in Portugal), the top from Type911 and the bottom from Rose Passion.

Nick cleaned, plated and rebuilt the column.

Nice work, and the costs must be getting quite high, but a great car in the end.
Very interesting thread, thanks for all the detail (and from Nick too).

The standards you are all ready to reach to are so high now, makes me embarrassed as to the 're-build' I did way back. :?
