These marks were rather odd.
Upon seeing them I quizzed Nick as to what they could be. I felt sure they were markings from the previous engine builder.

He conceded they were probably for numbering the rods but it was a bit strange.
A discreetly etched number on a non stressed part of the component is generally the way to do it. Punching sharp indents is probably not best practice.

Nick started cleaning things up and setting stuff aside ready for the rebuild.

OK, lets start in on the engine rebuild.

It was going to be undertaken with no thought of ‘make do’.
I wanted it done properly and whilst the money was of some concern I trusted Redtek to charge a fair price.
Redtek were careful to give me a comprehensive estimate at the outset and whilst that was a little more than I was expecting, when you review what is to be done you begin to understand why it’s costly.

I’m very pleased with the work Nick Fulljames has done and I believe it represents excellent value for money. There were no surprises in the final billing and the original estimate was honoured.
The only extra I incurred (but could not have been predicted at the beginning) was for a new pulley that was deemed necessary for the MFI pump. That was very modest in cost and of no real consequence.
I don’t believe Nick charged me for all his time. There was no cost for checking compression ratios and I know there’s some work there. He also included some minor parts not itemised on the final invoice.

So, before we start I'll say I'm delighted with the outcome.
If you need an engine rebuilt for your early 911 you can't do better than a visit to Brackley.

The following list of words don’t take long to scan through but try and dwell a little and understand all the work involved with each task.

For the bottom end, the work done included: Recondition cases, replace all bearings, shuffle pinning, line hone, implement the oil pressure relief by-pass upgrade, reface the barrel decks, polish the crank, resize rods, all new nuts, bolts, gaskets & time serts. We also took the opportunity to incorporate upgraded head studs.

Are you going to 'treat' the block to stop it 'corroding' - wrong word but hopefully explains the idea of protecting the magnesium ?

Ian, I'm not fussed about protecting the magnesium but Nick may have 'treated' it, my gearbox certainly has a protective coat of something.
I understand the Gibbs Protectant (that was talked of recently on here) is good for magnesium. Not sticky either. One to consider.
