Re: 75 S to R Homage
Spent a happy day yesterday at TT racing fault finding trying to identify my misfire. First we checked the flow at each carb with a synchro ..all fine...Then Terry has a really cool plug in spark generator which we were able to use to fire each lead and plug separetly albeit randomly. They were all fine.
Next each coil out put ...all fine then dizzy cap through rotor to plug posts....hmmm sparks but tiny....stripped the custom rotor and adaptor and using the spark generator looked for leakage to earth ie tracking...all fine. Careful look at dizzy cap...fake Marelli!!!!! and what looks like poor spark transmission from internal to external posts there are clear marks on the internal posts as one would expect with the spark jumping from the rotor.
Going to order a real cap tommorrow to prove or disprove our theory.

Sounds promising - hope that turns out to be the problem.

Re: 75 S to R Homage
Since I had time I had a play with my existing ignition set up today. I made a copper center electrode to replace the carbon brush and carefully measured the pattern rotor . I discovered that the rotor electrodes were not parallel to each other which mean't they weren't in good alignment with the cap pins.
Some good old garage engineering and I had a 6 cylinder 911.....so had a drive ..a huge improvement for 1/2 a mile when the bonnet gave up the unequal battle with the headwind and since I'd forgotten to refix the clips..blew off and straight over the roof......boll##ks
Still not too bad only cosmetic damage to the bonnet and zero to the car. So a little work still to do but at least I've sorted the ignition, note to self " be less impetuous".......

Re: 75 S to R Homage
Oh dear!
I have a similar story when I once took somebody for a test drive as they were looking to buy my old 912. Hadn't shut the bonnet tight and got to speed and it lifted off!
Plus the brakes failed a bit further on - great test drive!
They bought the car though.
|Good news on the 6 cylinders and hope the bonnet repairs aren't too great.

Re: 75 S to R Homage
I've only gone and sorted it haven't I
I discovered after some input from friends ( you know who you are) that I had not proven the idle circuit on the LHS carb and in particular No3 cylinder properly. It was blocked solid on the fuel suction side from the bottom of the emulsion tube.
I drilled out the lead plugs cleared the blockage re plugged the holes with some split shot that fishermen use and ran it up. Instantly better and pulls dead clean to 4500rpm when it has a little stutter which I'm sure a rolling road session will sort.
Beer o'clock me thinks and no more ignition compatability questions
Ohh and the bonnet is repaired and fitted just need a red nose decal and to fit my "new" suffix '69 reg. Seat upholstery aside its finished ( for now) so I think I'll have to consider a proper unveiling video and walk by....

well done
it's so much easier fixing a problem when you are looking in the right place!! I was convinced my initial running issues were spark, but turned put to be fuel. Great when it works right and you feel it straight off
