I sold a car last year to Germany. The new owner paid 10% by IBAN Bank Transfer and paid the full ballance the day before he came to collect the car. In fact the money actually arrived several days before we completed the sale.

Be difficult to do a transfer there and then and see the money in your account. I receive a far few international payments and it usually takes a couple of days for them to appear following the transfer.
Must be a solution though

Absolutely definately not unless you get him to draw it out from his bank in front of you or get him to take it to your bank and get him to pay it into to your account at the counter (so he gets arrested and not you if it is fake).

Is there any reason why paypal can't be used for instant payments (assuming the buyer covers the fees)

International Payments

I think PayPal has too many clawback clauses to make me comfortable but a google will give you more idea.

As above, I'd suggest a cash transaction at a bank. It is safer for the buyer (public place although still some risk) and the seller (bank takes liability for checking the notes & counting).

Either that or Western Union, I hear they are popular for these sorts of transactions ;)

Don't use PayPal, it can be clawed back after payment via a dispute

Iban transfer and only let the car go once the money is in your bank

International Payments

If you do go with iban, ask your bank when is the earliest point you can transfer the funds out (ie to savings ac). This will tell you when the funds are safe with no risk of cancellation.
With chaps, I asked to withdraw in cash a transfer on the same day and was told I couldn't because there was a remote possibility the transaction could be cancelled.

Agreed, discuss it with the bank in advance to be fully aware.
