Steering wheels

does anyone have any sugestions as to what a good steering wheel to get my car passed sva. i like the mota lita wheels but not sure if the spokes and boss will pass. if anyone has any sugestions it would be appeciated.

I think the best thing to do is stick the original Beetle wheel for the SVA and then put the motolita one on after !

Thats what I intend to do

i sort of binned it about 5 years ago- getting a new one is no problem but as far a i know it hasn't a collapeable boss. or am i misinterpiting the sva guide.

I m with Steve, I m planning to use one of the latest style Beetle wheels, the rubber centres 4 spoke style, I believe thats suitable, then change to a more interesting item after..

what would that be a 1303 style one? and will it fit a non 1303 coloum.

Yes 1303 - not sure about the column - I thought the only change was from bat wing style wheel which has larger splines to the later 60's type. I havent got a column or a suitable wheel yet, I m using an early wheel and have a '49 column - these are longer and I have a flat wheel so needed it. I think all going through the SVA this year should chip in on a SVA "kit" that we could pass between us. As several items are needed but only for the day..

I ll publish a fresh post - but I think theres at least 4 of us in the same boat, yourself, JonR, Droog and myself, and we're all going to need items just to SVA so makes good sense I m not keen to own a 1303 wheel after!

If we can suss a list of what we need, or need to modify modify (horn grill covers) and could share the burden be good for all..

The Beetle steering column splines were universal from the (?) late fifties right thru to '77. Then the splines changed to those used in the (the new) Golf. Actually I guess it might just as well have been the New Golf having a Beetle spline pattern!
So the early '03 plus similarly aged torsion bar Bugs had the early style & later aircooleds had the 'Golf' pattern. My scrapyard theory is if you can comfortably stick you thumb into the steering wheel splined hole it's pre '77 (I'm expecting pre '55 ish to no longer be in a scrappyQ!
