Re: 1973 2.4E Restoration
And so on to the mechanical side of things and an update I've been meaning to post for a little while...
I took my 915 box along to to DDK's favourite gearbox Guru and all round nice bloke Mike Bainbridge at MB Engineering.....
The box didn't look too pretty to start with and the casing was quite badly corroded...
Inside though the mechanicals were quite good and after they were stripped and cleaned....
...various shims, plates and bearings were replaced - Mike also managed to source me an original ZF Limited Slip Differential which was also rebuilt and checked at 40% ...
...with everything tested, checked, reset....
... and re-built into a clean set of magnesium cases...
...we ended up with a fresh gearbox waxed and looking like this...
Considering I've been told by numerous highly knowledgeable 911 enthusiasts that Mike is THE leading authority on gearbox rebuilds I was amazed at how reasonable his services were
For those that aren't aware - for a professional, highly skilled, knowledgeable, efficient, friendly and no-nonsense honest service, I don't think you could better Mike Bainbridge at MB Engineering - Highly Recommended and money very well spent.
Cheers Mike

Just catching up on this thread, that’s looking lovely Darren.
Out of interest what’s the coating MB applied to the outer casing of the gearbox?

Re: 1973 2.4E Restoration
Thanks Garry, it's the same type of wax coating that was originally applied although not sure what it's called. I'm seeing Nick later so will ask him.visualfx wrote:Out of interest what’s the coating MB applied to the outer casing of the gearbox?

Re: 1973 2.4E Restoration
It's a product that we use in the oil and gas industry and is a semi hard wax. Mike thinks its a very similar product to that the factory used on the crankcases and the gearboxes. It comes in an aerosol and is about £12 a tin.visualfx wrote:Just catching up on this thread, that’s looking lovely Darren.

Re: 1973 2.4E Restoration
Thanks John - although we've just taken it apart again!johnM wrote:Shell looks fantastic by the way.
I ordered all new washers and bolts from Porsche and had missed the spacers inbetween the wings, absolutely no chance of gently prying apart the 3M Body Caulking (it would hold the wings on by itself) so the wings came off and we started again! - We were also a touch too enthusiast when colour sanding a tiny blemish on a door so had to redo that as well - I expect there's still a few things to come.
I appreciate your input above - you must update us on your road trip, hope it went well.
Cheers,
***Learning Curve and a correction to the above - When I ordered all new bolts and washers from Porsche for fitting the wings I was supplied with both metal and fibre washers - I assumed the fibre washers to be a spacer that went in between the inner and outer wings, this is incorrect and there is no spacer, just Dum Dum - the fibre washer in fact sits behind the metal one to stop moisture getting through the bolt - Many thanks to Barry for highlighting this, very much appreciated and the magic of DDK
Now we'll be fitting the wings for a third time! ***
