radar wheels and wide 5 disc brakes

Post by RoscoP »

Folks,
As you may have read in the Newbies section, I'm currently restoring a 59A. I've bought a set of MWS Radar reps - yeah I know but they were cheap and I'm tight!- and I'd like to fit them to a front disc brake update kit as I'm not a big fan of drums up front! I'm looking at 2 types, the CSP (light but pricey) and the Zims (heavy but cheaper) but I've read on various VW and Porsche forums that there may be a problem fitting the Radars to either disc conversion. So, are any of you out there running discs with Radars and, if so, were there any issues? Also, any comments regarding the disc conversions themselves ie fitting, track increases, suppliers assistance etc would be gratefully received. It may end up that I have to trial fit a wheel to someones car to make sure it all hangs together!
Any pics of your drum braked 356's with front wide 5 conversion would also be v. welcome!

Thank you for listening.

Folks,
No joy with my original post so 2nd request!
Have any of you or failing that - do any of you know anyone - who has fitted the CB performance wide 5 disc conversion with dropped spindles to a 356. A friend of mine runs them on his 63 Bug drag racer and my Radars fit fine on his set up . It looks like it may be relatively easy bolt on job as the 356 link/king pin set up looks identical to the Bug, but I'd like to get any info from those of you who've tried it!

Thank you for listening.

I don't have direct experience of fitting the CB disc conversion but I think VW dropped spindles will fit, you just have a bit of mixing and matching of VW/Porsche bearings, tie-rod ends, etc.
Have a look at the link below for a discussion on it.

Kerscher do a disc upgrade suitable for an early 356, big enough price but Kerscher kit is nice... :)

Sorry, it's 5x130 pcd that I had in my head also. Are you hell bent on using discs? The standard 356A drums do a great job if they are set properly, only begin to hint at fading if you're throwing the car around a track...

Hi Kev,
I used to have a T5B with drums and I remember I was forever adjusting them and wasn't overly impressed with their stopping power. Also, I think that the price of new wheel cylinders is mental - you can almost buy a set of Zim's disc brakes for the same money as a set of front slave cylinders!
BTW, re the above pic,356 8) A, red custom paint, lowered with Radars.....does it get any better??!!!!

Thank you for listening
