Nomenclature....

Post by Tosh »

So it's a nine-eleven, but a nine one two (I've heard the odd 'merican saying nine-twelve)

It's a nine four four, or nine one four, or a nine nine three, nine six eight, nine o four, nine one seven etc. I never hear three fifty six

but you never hear nine one one

why?

I hear a nine one one on occasion and a three fifty six every now and then... what I never hear is " Look at that, it's a Porsche nine hundred and eleven", or, " that three hundred and fifty six is a lovely car"

Maybe breaking the nomenclature down as we do gives it a sense of the technical ?

Conveys to others the impression of knowing what we're talking about ??

It's very early to think about things like this.

I have a three - five - six, but when talking to Mike Smith at PRS it's a three fifty six. Mine is a Texan car so he's probably right. Maybe it's three fifty six for the Stateside ones and something else for the others 8)

I call mine '9-twelve' & '9-fourteen' because it fits in with the '9-eleven' which most people use?

but i also say 3-5-6

The origin of 911 is 901 which no doubt you would have said 'nine oh one' so maybe it should be nine one one.

A bit early for such things, but we must all be deeply involved in this porsche game because 9- whatever, we can translate dead accurately what anyone is on about howsoever stated!

What about the god of all Porsches, the 917?

I've just said nine - seventeen in my mind typing it.

Maybe this 9eleven/9oh one is a particularly Gemanic way of going on. I suppose the nomenclature of the cars, like the cars themselves would be born in the drawing office. Are there any historical texts suggesting the 901 was always a `neun null ein` and not a `neunhundert und eins` ?

in the drawing offices I worked in, each part number was read out as individual numbers ... although when talking about each series of designs, for example certain designs classed as the 900 series , you'd always refer to them as the 900's .... go to the file & search the 900 series drawings etc etc

But even then , that was fully down to how the individual engineers fancied callling them ,... so in other words, there is no right or wrong way

Personally, I refer to the 911 as a nine eleven, a 912 as a nine one two , a 356 as a three five six etc

also , 996 is nine nine six, not nine ninetysix

My father always refers to my car as a "Ninety one two"!!, We all know that's not right and he only does it to wind me up  .
