On the £50 thing there definitely used to be a limit on currency you could take in and out of the country - from him saying that it sounds like there is a part of the story missing as you suspect

Here are some details from Hansard of a debate on the limit

http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/comm ... lb50-limit

Limit was abolished in 1959 but then reimposed in 1966 - the debate appears to be in the house of commons on a proposal to remove the limit

(not sure if this was then some sort of scheme to get money into the UK as way of payment??).
Round about '69/'70 I recall there was a limit of 50 quid going OUT of the country. If changing money to go on foreign holidays, for example, then the amount changed was written (in sterling) in your passport....
Does that help? Or confuse things?

Great story :)

but I hope the 911T was a recce car and not a reggie

Oh and the 50 quid thing was in for 1965, as we went to the US that year and the Customs got sticky with my dad as we left the UK, for me as a 7 year old having £50 as my "pocket money " :)

I did say they were Brendan's notes (that's my only excuse) taken at the time. He is a lousy speller.

buying cars with your foreign 'cash' winnings & importing them back into the UK .... income tax evasion ? , especially if the cars were low value prototypes / race cars ?

On the dvla front, Brendan had a reply confirming all the details of the car on it's import to the UK.
This confirmed that it was not Paddy McNally who brought the car to the UK. We knew that after he wrote to us.

I kept one vital piece of information back from you from that letter. Paddy McNally confirmed that he only kept the car for about one year in Geneva and then sold it to another one of his local friends and compatriots ..........

That Paddy was the third owner makes more sense when looking at the Kardex.
Now to examine the dates more carefully.
Robs Lamplough might have owned the car a very short time.
From the Kardex it looks like import into UK in 1969, and sale to Paddy on Jan 15, 1969

You are on the wrong track guys although the Scottish connection figures and we thought of that too. In fact, we wrote to him speculatively to see if he knew the car.

Brendan got a very nice reply in double quick time from him to explain he did not know the car.
