Speedster Project Update

Post by Gone in 60 seconds »

Seems like months since I last had the spare time to spend on the M&W project, but the arrival of the body tub, and finally completing the Type 4 rebuild has motivated me back to serious action...March/April deadline still in my sights...

The Type 4 fits (but only just - had considered a 2.7 911 engine i have spare but fear of it being too much weight and power for such a light car put me off.... thankfully, can t see it going in! Having struggled with the type 4 and the upright fan conversion..)

With the Body Tub in place..its starting to look the part, now just need to cut a few holes!!

Engine looks great huh...just one thing...

Ooopppss, no prizes for noticing the problem!....told you it was tight...at least it won t overheat!

I ll keep everyone up to date as it moves on...long winter nights ahead in the garage...should keep the with happy :?

Looking good.

Are you fitting a kafer brace, rear mount, or the like to stop the engine's torque twisting the frame arms?

Yeah I had been giving it some thought, want to do what I can to enhance the handling generally. Still trying to find a good price from a UK supplier, Hows your car going has the engine arrived from Ruby yet? Is that your intention to brace?

Looking good! Did you build the T4 motor yourself? I'm just in the process of rebuilding my T4 and thinking of converting to an upright, where did you get the housing from?

Keefy,
have a word with Shambly he's got a spare motor or will do shortly once his Raby motor comes in from the US..

Nige,
Yes Type 4 was a home build, I picked up the conversion kit from LA Performance who also completed the machine work on the case and fan. Pretty straightforward to put all up together.

So just dropped all the bits, case, heads, etc off at LAP they did the machining and gave it all back in a kinda kit form?

I'd be interested to know what performance mods/rebuild can be done at home with a DIY tool kit.

I've part stripped my motor down and was thinking of having a pro do the heads and any other machining work required. Then put it back together myself.

Pablo - thank you

Nige,
Basically i took just the two halves of the case to LAP, all dismantled and cleaned. They then set it onto a jig (bolted together) and basically took a eliptical cut out of the front section, where the alternator mounts, and fitted a revised end section (just a small angled block).

I had independantly purchased a 911 fan and fan surround and like wise the surround needs to be machined, to creat a perfect outer edge and remove the mountings that are no longer required.

I brought a fan strap (the metal brace in the pictures) the fibre glass fan surround from LAP, but need to revisit to get a oil filer as mines not suitable now, and I m also going to buy the dual carb linkage from Lee.

To improve the Type 4 I had the heads remachined and converted to unleaded, and fitted enlarged forged pistons, reported gas flowed heads a Forged Crank with a longer throw and a 914 cam, plus the twin Dello's, should be good for 130bhp..which is plenty for a car weighing so little.

Also fitted remote oil cooler, oil pressure release valves.

Only other thing to buy is an alternate flywheel, the 228mm wont fit into the type 1 gearbox with the clutch, but that wouldnt be an issue to you..

Thanks for the insight, I'll more than likely be giving LAP a visit.
