Re the Valve Guides/Heads - If stuck you could try Lester Owen in Telford (L H Owen - 01952 616846). Amongst other things he is best known for his BMW race engines built for Chevron, Alan Minshaw etc. When he was setting up my Targa on his rolling road in July ’08 we were talking about rebuilding 911 engines and he mentioned having done so, and specifically talked about reconditioned 911 cylinder heads, he clearly knew the right way to go about it.

Thanks John, things have moved quite quickly today, Sunday.
The box came out yesterday after getting back home and by 9.30am the engine was on the stand!
Have all the heads off and the barrels, starting with # 6,5 and 4, the problem side.
It all came apart well and i even found the genade pin for the tensioners after 16 years, and my old valve spring compressor last used on my DIY rebuild of my 2.4 E/S.
# 6 barrel looks ace, valves look a bit 'iffy' and the rings are all in one piece but sure are shiney.
The heads are/were very coked-up on all of them, so oil getting in/up from somewhere, so suspect the rings.

The heads are all cleaned now, the valves all polished and ready for a good night of lapping and re-assembly when I get the gasket set for the seals. Guides could be better, but no time to do all that.
I need to get a big ring compressor and a pair of ring pliers for the 18 rings to fit.
I have been the luckiest Porsche nut today.
Taking the second cam out the timing dowel DROPPED into the ENGINE.
That was a bit of a surprise. I huridly rotated the engine on the stand. Nothing came out.
Rotated it again, nothing. Depressed I rotated it again and rattle rattle the dowel came out of the guts of the engine.
See, swearing does work.

I've spent from 7.30am to 5.00pm = 10 hours doing this today.
Imagine the cost @ £60/hr = £600 already.
A local Porsche specialist charges £3000 for this top end job inc out-in the car with the engine.
Cripes.
Bad news is my old 73T with a 3.2 is at 130K miles so could do with this job on it also!

Pressed-on today as i have a wed next week deadline with Bob Watson Engineering...
Bought a snazzy 'special' piston ring compressor and ring pliers for the nervey job of the rings etc event.
The pliers are great and all the rings installed with ease. The compressor is rubbish, and the demon release spring broke on the first piston so had to revert to manual control and a big screwdriver to make it work. After quite a game all barrels are on with no side effects bar a bruised finger that got trapped..
Heads dropped on loose at first and the cam carrier on top and all torqued down. Cams rotate with ease.
I've loosed into position the sprockets remembering the offsets and put the dowls in with great care incase one dropping in again.
The engine is ready to go to Bob for a While-you-Wait cam timeup and run home for the final dressing up of the engine and the install back into the Lola.
I think I've spent more time cleaning things than putting it back together.
My best friends have been a magnetic headed probe, a pile of freezer bags to keep things in and identified, and great advice and help from Mike Bainbridge and Bob.
I'll be glad to be free of engine oil soon.

Took it to Bob's for cam timing this afternoon where Matt did the business and installed all the valve gear (that's me being lazy) while i perused the workshop...
Some nice cars there and one i know from the hills too.
The killer was the fab 914-6 in burnt orange with GT flares and frosted Fuchs, reg ending in 9146.
What a nice car (2.4E/S I think). Almost made me want to swop for my 911 hotrod!
Car will be back at the bank hols next week to be put on the rollers and 280 bhp/300 lbft result on the printout....

No, unfortunately! I had started to work on the 911 in plenty of time, for a change, and then we saw and fell in love with a bungalow that has enough space and facilities to help Katie with her disability, has several outbuildings, a couple of paddocks with enough room for motorhomes and trailers (and which will doubtless need a Porsche tractor to help keep it in trim
)
And if that's not enough, it's 180 miles per round trip less to all of the Midland venues!
So, there's a lot of saving, tidying, packing, trips to the tip, and preparation to sell our property here, after 23 years........................
I'll try to get to one or two meetings to give you a cheer on, and get you going faster!

If not then maybe a nice 300 bhp turbo Subaru flat 4 and box will be just the ticket or sell up and put the 911 on slicks.

Everything back into the Lola and will be ready for a rolling road tune next week. I hope to have a 6 cylinder engine evenly running with no oil leaks....
This should now be a carb tune-up and I hope 220 bhp/200 lbft and easy starting. We shall see.
If not, maybe that turbo Subaru engine in there with its gearbox will be the next avenue to try!
