Don't bother! Am I the only person on the planet who thinks these things are just a load of bollox?
No offence intended but I can't see why I'd want to go and find a business on Facebook? Or read what people have been upto on Twitter?
Perhaps I should audition for the next series of Grumpy Old Men!

Allow me to retort..... (guess the film )
Blogs and other social media are now getting preferential treatment from the search engines - if you change your web page it will be reindexed by google within about 10 days, if you do a fresh blog entry it will index it within the hour.
Twitter receives similar treatment.
Twitter as used by celebrities is, I agree, bollix. Too many people spend all day tweeting about what they had for breakfast or the colour of their poo. Not interested. They seem to think that because some celerbity's daily movements are apparently of interest to other people (but why?) then theirs are too
However you can use twitter for Search Engine Optimization purposes.
Step 1 - do your blog - make it interesting and full of stuff that points at your website and/or points to key services you offer on your website - ideally using key words you are focussing on
Step 2 take the URL of your new blog entry and feed it into Bitly which will comperess it to a very short URL (You're limited on characters in twitter remember)
Step 3 do a few pithy tweets containing your shortened URL. - You can use Bitley to track how many people clicked on your twitter links
HTH

The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

As Mark said the more traffic you can get on, around and about your web site the more search engines find you and point people to your site. Facebook works well for my business but I've got a hairdressers and we are trying to attract young trendies through our door and they love all this social network and the Internet and most of them do it all via a mobile phone (as I am now on my iPhone). It all depends on your customers and the customers you want to attract, but saying all that 93% of all people in the UK find or buy stuff via the web so you need to come up in the top 3-4 on any search! IMHO
Get tweeting/facebooking/bloging (copy and paste it from one to the other) good luck

To be fair we're probably too old to "get" them.
But plenty of 20 somethings live on the stuff.
As said tweets are too short to be useful but good for announcing updates to a Facebook/blog/website. Then taking time to record interesting examples of your work in regular updates is a great way to showcase your business. With a skilled business like yours, examples of engine builds with unusual problems and creative/ quality solutions would demonstrate your abilities and standards. It's easy to say you're a highly skilled specialist but if you can demonstrate it to potential cumstomers worldwide then it has more impact.
A great example? Alan's '68 S
He could have invested all that time and money then sold the car with hardly anyone knowing. However by sharing this on the web he has showcased his/Barry's considerable talents in a global way. The story was also interesting and very entertaining for all of us. Frankly, I expect Canford to be reaping the benefits of that "marketing" for years. Hats off to them.
