G'day Andy
No, you can't take Queen off the top. Queen was not only a wonderful rock group, but also a significant bridge between rock and so much else - right up to opera. I listen to a lot of classical stuff too, but my basis is R & B. But when I listen to, for example, Bohemian Rhapsody - as I do often - I am really astonished by how much of the spectrum poor old Freddie and his boys covered.

But Simon's original, and very interesting thread question, was a bit too narrow. Not nearly enough room to fit the ones you know are great, but don't really want to listen to every day. I mean, Elvis Presley probably should be at the top of everybody's list in terms of what he meant to the development of rock music as we know it. But as much as I like Elvis, I don't want to listen to him all that often.

I'd love to fit in groups like Sky, and Roxy Music, Bill Haley, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Billy Bragg, Wilco, The Grateful Dead, Blind Faith, Deep Purple . . . .and on and on.

Whatever, I'm really pleased to see that there is a considerable overlapping of musical and vehicle taste on DDK. Makes me feel even more comfortable about belonging.

The General Chat section is something that really sets DDK apart from a lot of the humorless groups that sic (spelling?) the thought police onto you if you stray from strict technical topics.

Keep threads like this coming please. I've got lots of new musical leads to follow up now.

Cheers

I think i might be missing the jist of this thread, but after strumming and picking at guitar for 35 years (badly) I'm very bias to the guitar in all music.

Queen and the 'popular' bands are fantastic and reach across generations. My 24 year old daughter knows all the Queen songs from Uni and so do all her mates.

Recently found the best guitarist who i doubt would fit into any group who record songs, but top of my 'Top Ten' would be Tommy Emmanuele

Fine Sunday morning with an hour to waste I warmed up the valves and after flicking through some old stuff found this..

1984, oh the memories, an extraordinary album, still as strong as it was way back then, when we went to defcon 2 and armageddon was upon us. A whole generation and genre grew out of this album.

I recommend it to the house. :)

Mike.

Queen seem to be big in these lists . . . now this may be sacrilage or something interesting for Queen fans. A while ago I took a Freddie Mercury demo called "New York" and built a complete track around it with Queen samples and additional production. Anyways if you're curious to hear a "new" Queen track you can download it from the audio section of my site www.mash-ups.co.uk. Enjoy (or burn me at the stake!)

Cwhor, how did I miss this thread?!?

Completely agree about Pleasuredome Mike, funnily enough I was listening to it earlier this week before I saw this thread <spooky> Anyone else remember their version of Ferry Cross The Mersey ("Fury") - that was the B side to the 12" Relax. I remember queuing to buy that from about 7am the morning it came out ("if you're late again, supervisor ses we'll have tu put yer on dailly signing") I can highly recommend "Twelve Inches" which has Trevor Horns craziness over 18 excellent tracks.

I seem to have 'two personalities' (some would say more ) - one rock (thanks to my older brother and sisters) the other more electronic which I guess is where my real love is. So, to try a top ten of each?!?

Rock:
1. Jethro Tull (amazed no one else has put them )
2. Led Zep (difficult whether to put them as 1 or 2)
3. Pink Floyd
4. Marillion
5. Genesis (Selling England by the Pound, before PG departed)
6. Tangerine Dream (yes, in both lists )
7. Emerson Lake & Palmer
8. Hendrix
9. Yes
10. Stones

Electronic:
1. Blancmange (Irene and Mavis anyone?)
2. Thomas Dolby (Flat Earth Society?)
3. Venus Hum (Big Beautiful Sky)
4. Human League (Travelogue)
5. Propaganda (Secret Wish)
6. New Order (Hmmm. probably International)
7. Tangerine Dream (Poland or Logos)
8. Depeche Mode (Broken Frame)
9. Peter Grabriel (PG4 THE album of all time)
10. Hybrid (all of them!)
11. Jean Michelle Jarre (Journey through O2)
12. Royksopp
13. Boards of Canada
14. The Beloved
15. Klaus Schulze
ok, I can't keep it to 10

Two new'sih discovery's - Imogen Heap - love her 'Speak for yourself' album.

Also try Radio Nigel for the best in Alternative 80's - forget New Wave, it's purely Depeche, Cure, Talking Heads, The The etc. www.radionigel.com

Great to revisit this site after seeing so much along the way that I had never really listened to. I'm trying to make up for it now, and have really enjoyed exploring from the hints this thread has provided.

But your rock list, pjmt, has reminded me of at least a few I had forgotten that would definitely be on my top 50, if not top 10.

Jethro Tull definitely, a real oversight all round, and yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery and thereabouts, Genesis and Selling England By the Pound, Yes (I think I did add them in one post after my original), particularly around Tales of Topographic Oceans time.

Thanks for the reminders. Will have to dig out the old vinyls again.

Marillian is one that seems to have passed me by. I'll see what I can find.

Cheers

 Wow - they were epic. While others may disagree, Marillion ended the day Fish left. I'm sorry, for me the band that continued just isn't the same (and his solo work is incredible imho).

Start with 'Script for a Jester's Tears' (Market Square Heros, Garden Party), then follow with Fugazi, then Clutching at Straws - only then venture into the commerciality of Misplaced Childhood which has some gems hidden in there.

And yes, before others chime in, it's just like Genesis if Gabriel had stayed on
