Cars' Names

Do other people have names for their P cars?

My family, when I was growing up in Australia, always gave names to the cars we all drove. And it is something I still do. My P cars, both in Oz and here in Japan, have always had feminine names. It probably has something to do with their shape, and particularly of their rear ends. My wife says she can't watch me wash and chamois down the P cars because it is "bordering on pornographic". Well, I'm not sure about that, but it is a chore I never shirk, even when there are a couple of other filthy cars in the garage.

My 964 is Clementine. I didn't name her that. A japanese friend who happened to be here one day not long after she arrived when I was washing her also claimed to see the lust in my eyes, and started whistling the old standard . . . "Oh my darling, oh my darling . . . . etc". So Clementine sort of stuck.

The 911S is a beast of an altogether different character and I thought still demanded something female, but a bit more robust. Finally settled on Brunhilde. In Norse mythology a shield maiden and one of the Valkyries.
Given the dramatic Wagnerian roar she makes when given a bit of a nudge it seemed entirely appropriate.

Kind of an odd thing to do, I guess, but I do know a few other people who do it.

Any interesting names - and reasons for them - among DDKers?

I am pretty boring and usually refer to them by colour - the green one or the white one or the blue one etc!

all of my cars are always called betsie, and my best mate always refers to his cars as maude.. ..this wasn't too worrying until the advent of satnav, at which point madue and bets turned into rather strict sounding german women, and i started having conversations with them

recently maude got a new friend; my mates latest acquisition has something called "e-diff" which works particularly well for smoking chav's away from the traffic lights. this piece of switchable limited slip technology has (quite sensibly) become known as edith

The RS has been Charlie for many years:

She had a cherished plate (1 KNK) on since the 70's and so when it came off, the record for the 'original' number she was born with (CMR 313L) had never been computerised - and a number was given from when the cherished plate went on (1976). Mercifully she was featured in the John Starkey and elsewhere with the original plate and I had a copy of the original V55/5 - so was able to fight to get the number back.

It took about fifty calls to the DVLA, over a twelve month period, to argue to get the original number reinstated (which they did!) - and each time I called, I'd have to say 'Charlie Mike Romeo Three One Three Lima' - the 'Charlie' kind of stuck

We use the names all the time. It seems much easier to say "Are we taking Brunhilde?" than "Are we going in the 911S?". I guess "the silver one" or "the orange one" is an easy alternative. But they DO have personalities.

I like the name Kathryn. I am currently married to one, and was married to another for 30 years.

Also intrigued a bit by Disraeli (!!) for a Merc. Unless it has more to do with GEARS than Benjamin! (I am also a bit of an old Clapton tragic).

A bit of a nutter perhaps, but too old to change a habit of a lifetime.

I find it all a bit suspicious and perhaps infantile giving names to cars. And then I went to see a GP white Carrera 3 targa in january 2005, from a bearded fellow, expat in Saudi for many years, with a labrador, a wine nose and a jazz vinyl collection to suck your thumb with for many years of listening pleasure.

When we concluded the sale, he asked "do you want the registration it came with, VIB990, or leave JAZI on?" Erm, -being a bit naive- what was the story of the JAZI plate?

-Well, he said...., I'm a jazz man and I think my 911 is jazzy. And the rest is history.

I dont have a name for mine, except when Im under the car and something isnt going right, then I have plenty of names for her - none repeatable here though
