5 stud conversions and stub axles

Post by spotontheroad »

When converting to 5 stud hubs on a 914, most people suggest using (in the absence of a complete 914-6 set up) early 911 hubs and 914-6 stub axles. Why specifically 914-6 stub axles? What is the difference between 914-6 stub axles and early 911 stub axles (that would go with the early 911 hubs)?
Any info greatly appreciated
Regards

From memory it's the drive-shafts that are different. longer/shorter and the spline count is different

Hi Keith - are you talking about the rears on a 914?
For the front you can swap the entire front for 911 suspension - you don't need 914-6 sub axles. Can get costly though if you have to recondition it first. you would also benefit from 911 calipers as well.
What age is your 914? If it is an early one then the front discs are the same as VW Beetle 1303 ones. You can get a set of porsche PCD ones from Machine7 automotive (I've just replaced my front ones).
For the rears, my discs have been drilled to 5 stud (appears to be the easiest route for the conversion).

Hello,
Yes, I did mean on the rear. I already have the necessary kit (minus the anti roll bar) to convert the front.
I have a pair of early 911 rear hubs and matching stub axles and was hoping to avoid having to track down 914-6 axles at exhorbitant prices. I will drill 914 disc and retain 914 rear calipers but I was just curious as to why 911 stub axles were not used. Its it possible to use 911 drive shafts at all (with or without modification)? Is it that they are just regarded as an expensive extra if you already have 914 drive shafts that could be used and that is why people opt for 914-6 s/axles?
Just curious before I start spending money.
My 914 is a 71.
Cheers

Mine has just had the std rear hubs re-drilled and studs fitted. ROBSTER on the forum had it done when he had the car so can probably shead more light on the mod.

Early rear hubs from a 914/4 are better for redrilling for 5 stud as they have extra bosses on the rear, whereas later cars only had 4 bosses on the rear of the hub.
Going for 914/6 stubs and 911 hubs also gives a stronger assembly without the need to redrill and stud.

Don't take my word for it though... this is the original source, pretty useful!

The 911 cv's are bigger than the 914 so the 911 stub axle isn't compatible with the 914 driveshaft and the splines are also different so you can't use a 914 stub axle with a 911 hub. There are several combinations of CV, transmission output flange, and stub axle that can be used all of which need some hard to find parts. Redrilling the 914 hubs is probabaly the easiest solution if not the nicest in engineering terms.

Hi,

I had the rear hubs drilled and tapped by stateside tuning many moons ago on what is now Jon's car.

However, I also have a spare pair in my garage already drilled, they will need the studs pressed in.

Any use? drop me a pm to remind me to look in the garage!

kind regards
Rob

I ended up going for a 911 front end and then getting the std hubs drilled and studded.

Worked fine for me, I found a local guy who did the hubs for about £50 then popped on new 5 stud discs which were cheap enough.

Dont forget you can drop in a 911 master cylinder too if you go 911 on the front, this will help (still got to put mine on!)

I've got some brand new SC discs if you need some, Zimmerman I think. Not after silly money.
