Welcome to the forum: your car sounds mightily interesting....from a perspective of someone who is gathering info on recreating a lost 911R based on a 67 L.
Did you do the work yourself or did you appoint someone?
Best regards,
Bert

Initialy I did everything myself , all the stripping down of the car , replating all the nuts & bolts , cad plating the bonnet catches , gold anodizing the soon roof reflector plate . Repainting all the engine tin ware and plastic coating the oil tank.
The next stage that took a few years was body build , 4 new wings , innner outer sills , front and rear bumbers and all ordered from the factory at the time as SWB stuff was not available oh and some SH doors to replace the originals.
Interior Retrim in black calf leather and carpets
Repaint to Silver , some new bumbers trims etc .
New Konis allround , brakers calipers, discs and Master .
Engine has been the thing that has taken time , this is basically an engine that has been built to 914/6 GT Rallye spec and still needs to be completed .
All l the Racing parts have been put on and all are original period Porsche and costs lots£££ , saying that nice addition to this was the Monza Wheel that I got last year , these are really nice and look better than the Momo wheels that are so often used, the wheel is a repro made by Jeffrey at Classico wheels he made small batch of 911R replica steering wheels last year .
All in all I have learnt alot in about these cars in the last 17years and attention to detail is paramount .. I,ve had parts that people have said are correct and just have not been , I,ve had people try and sell or give me parts that are a compromise , if you are OK with that then thats fine , but if you want your car to be as Porsche would do it , then thats requires a bit more patience and unfortunately money.
Like I say this car has been on the go for 17 + years , so costs have been spread over the time , and I still think my wife has only seen the thing once
so unlike many I have managed to keep hold of the thing and not been forced to sell it off .

Hi Woznot,
Nice to see another 'L' on the DDK - they're quite a rare beastie in RHD
Can I ask what the chassis number is? 118xxxxx?
My car is 11810056 - supplied to AFN in September '67, manufactured August '67 - strange mix of '68 and '67 model year with '68 interior but '67 door handles
Lots of photos from new to show how she was.
Do post some pictures if you can. Here's a piccie of my car as she is today after a lot of hard work and money
- I've been her custodian for nearly 11 years - previous owner for 27 and AFN for 3.

Hello Woznot,
thanks for your comprehensive reply. 17 years
?! That is a life project if ever I came accross one!
I have been collecting 911R stuff one and off since 2000 and copied all the stuff from Ernie Wilberg (spelling) when he posted it up on a website somewhere. I understood that he is writing a book on the R so that he can cash in on the research he has done; all the info is pulled from his website last time i looked.
I have seen left and right some R recreations/homages but I have yet to see the real deal. Chris Flavell of Fenn lane is a fellow 911R enthusiast I've spend many nights discussing, researching, looking and comparing specifications. I wanted him to build "my car".... I don't think that is going to happen.
I think I'm only just coming to terms what kind of a challenge it was in the pre-email/internet/scan era to find the information needed for such an enterprise, let alone the parts that were not available or were incredibly rare.
I take my hat off for that!
Do you have a mechanical engineering background or are you self-thought?
Best regards,
Bert

Thats my car as she left the factory in 68 , same colour etc , I changed the colour to silver , as I did,nt like the way the Burgundy looked "Brown" if you did not keep her clean , something I might regret , I may change back to the original burgundy again at some point . My car 11810240 which was imported by Mr Sheppard of Sheppards of Sidcup in Nov 1967 , he was a Porsche dealer at the time , so probably took delivery at the Factory, as I have no record of AFN supplying . I always though my car was one of the earliest 911L's but your beats mine ! nice looking car , you dont need a Spare 5.5 steel wheel do you ? I have one spare

What interior did she have? I've been trying to track a correct and original pair of seats down for the past eleven yearswoznot wrote:Thats my car as she left the factory in 68 , same colour etc
When he died, the factory sold and seats went in the skip!
It does take some keeping up, otherwise it goes 'flat' - but when polished up it looks wonderful - to my eyes anywaywoznot wrote: , I changed the colour to silver , as I did,nt like the way the Burgundy looked "Brown" if you did not keep her clean , something I might regret , I may change back to the original burgundy again at some point .
I know there were one or two other 'grey importers' (if you could call them that then). BUT AFN did supply other dealers then - my RS was supplied by Rob Walkers of Corsley (Wiltshire), via AFN - Walkers had a good customer who they supplied Italian to who wanted an RS and they dabbled in Porsche. It was all much more informal thenwoznot wrote:My car 11810240 which was imported by Mr Sheppard of Sheppards of Sidcup in Nov 1967 , he was a Porsche dealer at the time , so probably took delivery at the Factory, as I have no record of AFN supplying .
Have you ever talked to Geoff Moyes at AFN in Guildford? He has a lot of information regarding AFN's early cars and may know more about how she came into the UK.
I have a letter from the late Olaf Lang, confirming she was the first RHD 911L and first RHD Sporto produced - she stayed at the factory for a month or so before arriving at AFN with a couple of thousand miles on - so she was used for something. Then AFN's press car for the 1968 model year.woznot wrote:I always though my car was one of the earliest 911L's but your beats mine ! nice looking car ,

Hi Bertoex
I love the 911R look , and was tempted quite early on to go down that route , something that is quite achievable these days. What with the repro bumbers ,light clusters and windows etc , these are cheaper now than original standard porsche parts.. so getting the look is quite easy .Centre fill tanks are easy to do , with a bit of welding to 62 litre tank , getting a 100litre tank is pretty hard and expensive.
Getting the interior is easy as you can get the R seats and interior trim from loads of people these days real cheap .
Wheels are going to cost a bit of money , especially if you want 7Rs , mine are OK but to refurbish a set of 4 wheels is going to cost £1K thats without adding £800 pounds worth of XWX tyres .
Of course 911R look engines are not easy to replicate , the shrouds and engine tin are expensive even the repro stuff , and most 911R were duel plugged so that going to be something that even if reproduction is going to cost a couple of grand to do . Some 911R were injection some were carb based , original sloped rain covers are very expensive , though I have noticed someone in the US does repros for less than $400 .
The hardest thing to replicate on the 911R is the steering wheel , these were almost exclusively the "monza" wheel with 5 screws for the hub , not the 6 screw proto-tipo wheels that people often use .

There was one R that was equipped with MFI but i nthe end I'd choose the carb version. The plan is to recreate that SWB R that went LWB.
The first train of thought was to go to Supertec but actually I wouldnt mind the car being an all UK initiative. The expertise and the passion is more then plenty- it is trust, timescales, parts and track record that are the biggest areas of concern. Althought wat Mike is doing with the RSR proto recreation inspires confidence.
Biggest problem is finding a bodyshop/specialist who I can trust and who can deliver the goods. The spec is finalised, and indeed it wont be far short of a 997. But I never liked those kettles anyway.
Just need to wait until the credit crunch hits REALLY hard so that prices subside to more realistic levels and proper money can move into the game again.
On the other hand life might be too short, but a timescale that I have in the back of my mind is 2010.
