Been meaning to do one of these for a while...

Image

A few people already know this car. It's a UK right-hand drive blood orange 1972 2.4T, originally from North Wales (first two owners), then taken down to London by a dealer and sold to the third owner. I am the fourth owner. I joined DDK after buying it in September 2006. It was laid-up in the previous owner's garage with seized brakes, a severely out of tune engine and only 41706 miles on it's clock. The only documentation it had was a load of tax discs, a V5, and an enormous bill from Autofarm for brake and service work carried-out in September 2003. I bought it not knowing what the hell I was doing, but luckily the car was in pretty good shape, minus some rust on the wings and passenger kidney-bowl.

Image

After getting the car home on a transporter, it transpired the seized brakes were the result of a stuck pedal bushing (!), and once replaced and tuned, it ran pretty well. Here it is on a back road in Kent in January 2007:

Image

I enjoy doing work on the car almost as much as I love driving it. Since owning the car car, I have done the following bits:

Fitted new bonnet lifters

Thatcham Cat 1 alarm

Re-finished the Fuchs with Wurths factory-spec paint

Image Image

Restitched the factory steering wheel

Image

... then subsequently fit a Prototipo

Painted and fitted a black and silver GB badge

Image

Had new Dunlop 60-profile tyres fitted to replace the original 70-profile inner-tubed widowmakers

Fitted a period FM stereo

Image

Replaced a shonky oil tube (thanks Alan)

Image

Fitted posh mats from the US

Image

Refurbed the driver's side door pocket

Image

Tuned the carbs, about a thousand times

Fitted SSI heat exchangers

Image

Fitted oil-fed tensioners

Image

Fitted Spax adjustable front and rear shocks

Image

Executed a ghetto slam

Fitted a new boot liner

Removed the auxiliary enrichment circuit from the Zenith carbs

Image

Had two new front wings and kidney bowl rust removal and repair by Tuthills

Image

Fitted a new rear screen seal

Image

Fitted a new front screen seal

Image

Fitted Pertronix electronic points

Stealthy Sony Ericsson bluetooth handsfree kit

Image

Fitted a 15mm front anti-roll bar (rear to follow, pending arrival of mounting brackets from US)

Image

Fitted Superpro bushes to the front strut mounts, lower arms and ARB. Superpro engine mounts (really nice). Rear trailing arms and ARB bushes to follow when I have time.

Cheers Keith. I was thinking this after I did the list, and came to the conclusion that I just neglect other areas of my life, like sleep and relaxation.

Nige - shonky means dodgy, of poor quality, hashed-up etc. The oil pipe had cracked at the connector and was held in place with some sealant and a load of dirt. Nice.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Replaced gear oil this evening - it was less than a year old, but the little gate / switch thing that used to stop my shifter moving from fifth straight into reverse has disappeared, and I keep... err... pressing the lever against reverse on the motorway, which makes the car make a horrendous noise, echoed by horrendous noises from myself.

I drained the oil into a bucket and fished-around for metal bits. Luckily there were none at all. The oil was a bit grey, and the magnetic plug a bit fuzzed up, but I seem to have got away with it.

Put Swepco in which I bought yesterday after reading lots of good things. My box is OK, but like most 915s I have used, it's a bit clunky. Will report my findings!
