The e-coat in mine is still perfect.
I wonder if safe is warning against using incompatible coating or that if total adhesion in't achieved one may get "bits" in the oil and subsequent issues. Same would be true of fuel tank coating with possible less expensive consequences. Probably needs qualifying rather than be taken as absolute.

When I pulled mine for resto, I found that it had what appears as "red-coat" applied to the inside of the tank.
Looking back through the receipts for the car, I found that it had been done some 10 years ago, with no apparent negative effects.
