SFL 91K

This is my long legged road and Nurburgring Ring dream car. I spent far too long and far too much in the build but it rewards me with a buzz every time I strap in, and it gave me 20 Ring laps of absolute on-the-edge excitement. It was never intended to be an RS replica – I prefer black trim to chrome - but not surprisingly, it has ended up rather looking like one.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use it very much – only 3,000 miles since build – and I would now like the garage space back for another – completely different project.
I will put some detailed info on my web-site shortly (link to follow) but here are some brief details.
The shell was fully prepared by Chris Flavell of Fenn Lane Motor Sport. It’s loosely based on a re-shelled 1972 T. Body man Jeff did a beautiful job rolling and welding a steel sun roof delete so it is both rigid and waterproof……. It uses Chris’s long GRP bonnet, wings, air dam and duck-tail for a substantial weight saving. Rear lights are ‘R’ pattern with encapsulated LED bulbs. Rear LED Fog/wet race light. Paint is Gulf Blue and as soon as I received it I pumped the shell full of Dinitrol cavity wax! So, solid, rust free and beautiful!
Suspension uses the later SC alloy cross beam and rear arms. Bilstein shocks with new inserts. 21 mm Elephant hollow torsion bars. Strut brace with welded brackets.
Wheels are genuine 7” and 8” Fuchs, fitted with a good set of Toyo 888 205-50-15 and 225-50-15. Grip in the dry is simply fantastic and not too bad in the wet.
Interior has full lightweight trim including door cards and pull straps, all from Apelco. New OEM headlining. Seats are Sparco Evo One and Evo Two (slight difference in widths to fit the fuller figure)! 6 point Willans belts. Heated front and rear screens. Manual window winders. Rear bolted-in roll cage. Front cage and side bars included but never been fitted. Alloy foot board and navigator’s foot rest.

Engine is a bomb proof 3 litre with hydraulic mods, running on triple Weber carbs. 1 5/8th stainless steel headers and stainless steel silencer. Latest MSD 6AL2 ignition system (you can dial in rev limit instead of using the earlier chips) with MSD coil and tach adaptor. All new shielded leads. Turbo rocker covers with Weltmeister Silicone gaskets. Setrab Proline 50 element front oil cooler. Engine gave 208 hp on Alan Jeffrey’s test rig so there is a lot more available if you want to spend a little more.
Gearbox is a 915 mag cased mechanical drive box. 3,000 miles since a complete rebuild by Peter Tognola and filled with Swepco . Short shift change of course.
Custom pedal box with twin master cylinders for brake bias adjuster. Brake system completely rebuilt with new everything from pipes to EBC racing pads.
Electrics were re-wired and fuse boxes changed to modern plug in fuses. New alternator and a lightweight Odyssey sealed battery.
It is fully registered as a 1972 Historic Vehicle so tax and emissions free! Utterly reliable, needs nothing spending on it and just a blast to drive.
Price is £25.000 firm. Like they say, you couldn’t build it for that – I know!
Not really looking for part exchange but if I was offered an inexpensive early -1960’s - mini in rally trim I could be!
More photographs and information with pleasure. My e-mail address is: age_net@btinternet.com
Ps: If anyone is also a member of the Impact Bumpers site I would appreciate a cross reference because this is certainly a car which should be of interest there.
