RS Engine Bay

Post by Mike »

Decided to give the engine bay a little tidy up as the throttle bodies needed rebuilding and the timing chains wanted replacing. So powder coated the tin ware and cam covers, refinished the fan and shroud and plated the metal work. Now not only does it go like hell, it looks pretty good too!

Very nice Mike. Good job.
And I can testify just how fast it does go, he overtook and flew by me on our recent drive down to Goodwood. Mad bugger!

May I ask who did the throttle bodies? I am doing my own at the moment but may consider sending them out depending on cost?

Thanks

Hi Andy, still sometimes think I would chuck the whole thing in for a 2.8 twin plug and 9'' and 11" x15's!

Fitted the sealed rear quarter windows with the polished trim and corner pieces, now want the real profile stuff available in the states for $1000 (must be mad) and don't laugh at the glaverbel logo, cos its to big!

Hi Alan, the throttle bodies were rebuilt by Neil Bainbridge at BS Motorsport: http://www.bsmotorsport.co.uk/

Neil is an expert in these cars and he seems to lead the way in these types of modifications and development. The car was sucking air past the butterflies due to corrosion in the magnesium of the throttle bores and no amount of adjustment could get rid of the intermittant spit or low down stutter. Eventually the car was running very rich to get round it.

After stripping down the throttle bores Neil had them bored from 38mm to 40mm and then we fitted oversize butterflies he has had made up into the exsisting shafts. The bodies did not need rebushing, which one would do if nessasary at this stage. Neil replace the old linkage rods with his own new made up alloy versions and rebuilt the bodies with new plated springs, nuts and screws, and set the adjustment for the butterflies up on the bench using his own re-manufactured left and right handed alloy nuts which were then sealed. (Red paint in the pic.)

Back on the car even the idle was correct from the bench settings and now the cars just pulls cleanly from low revs and just keeps on pulling!

Obviously there is a step from the bores into the head which ideally in a full rebuild would be honed out, but there seems no ill effects, so a job for another time.

Hope this is of some help.
cheers, Mike.
