Question about length

Is there any difference in the length of dipsticks, from 2.0 litre cars to 2.2 2.4 2.7 3.0 etc ?

Chris - there were several different dipsticks used over the years.

I think these were:

'65-'71
'72
'73
'74-'80
'81-'89

- plus Sportomatic models

Some (I seem to remember) are the same overall length but the positions of the level markings are different.

My problem is that I have a 2.2 in the Modrod but the oil tank is later...'74. Had a recent issue of the car being over filled, trying to work out how to get an accurate reading on the stick. Currently there is 9quarts (just over 8.5 litres) in there, when idling at 180 degrees the oil warning light is on and nothing on the Dipstick.

Been abit busy recently and slowly getting back into car stuff

Do you have an external cooler in the oil system? Some systems with external cooler can hold 13 liters of oil.

Don't we all simply need to measure our dipsticks / known oil tank year?

Say from the 'max' dot to the end of the stick (finger pull), + max dot to min dot.

Get such a dimension from each year and the job is done.

My 73T has it's original tank and dipstick and I added a serpentine front cooler from an 'S' 20 years ago.
Measure the oil level after getting it sinking hot and left ticking over for min 30 secs and check level engine running as per usual, fill to 1/2 way between min/max.
It does not matter how much oil is in the system.

mine takes about 12 to 13 litres to refill after an oil change, but you must be sure the serpentine stat is open, ie the sill pipes are very hot to touch before you do the final dip stick check.
