Driving back from Nostell Priory on Sunday... a new 356 experience....

Something just didn't feel right but it took me a few miles before we pulled over...

The cause ? a slippery left heel !

There was a rather large smudge of oil on the floor mat under my clutch foot.

At first I thought it must be petrol from the petcock but no, definitely oil.

Brake fluid ??

Oil from the steering box ??

Perhaps, but it was coming from behind the dash !

So there I was, driving along in a 356 where all the oily bits are in the back... and I've got an oil leak on my foot.... surely it cannot be.

But it was.

So then, what do you think it might be ?

You have a bad seal in the Taco Cable (Engine End) and the Back-up Shim for the seal is also probably missing (they usually are)

It may have also filled up the Tacometer with oil, just for good measure

That's the problem with quizzes, here on DDk... the whole place is full of knowledge.

It did have me stumped but I must say, these days, I almost relish a who dunnit like this. A bit of a search on the Registry revealed, as you say, the seal at the oil pump, which prevents the oil pump pumping oil up the cable sheath, may have failed.

A quick call on Monday to RB and a new seal arrived in the post this morning. The old seal does look a bit knackered but hopefully I've caught it in time and the back of the tacho hasn't filled with oil.

I left the tacho cable off at the oil pump end, hoping it might drain a bit but I'm a bit worried I might have to undo the tacho end of the cable and blow it out. Anyway I fitted the new seal in readiness and the shim was there...hopefully it's a shim... and not just any old washer.

I've never really thought of P.R. Services as suppliers of small seals, I've always seen you as the Masters of the engine rebuild.. Maestros of the 356 regeneration

Yep, I have had that happen on many occasion, usually with my Sunday best on......

Easy fix.

Yep, oily trousers.

Fortunately the fix was straight forward.. old seal popped out with a pin, new seal popped in with a finger, the shim was present and correct.

£2.80, done and dusted.
