Re: We Go Merano!

Friday was the first official event day for the 356 International meeting. We were given a briefing the night before and a tulip style road book. Having come through the steep and twisting pass to enter Merano, we knew what to expect, except this would involve climbing several passes.

Image

In the car park in the morning I met someone who had had help with their clutch from the official rally assistance crew. I made a mental note that, if necessary, perhaps  I could get them to help us later.

The 356 was still stuttering as we were flagged off together with the 200 other "crews". We made our way out of the town, following a group of Cs. On the motorway, once again she cleared, and the A had no trouble staying with them. But with the first hard climb the engine started missing, badly at times.

Image

But the scenery, high up in the Dolomites was breathtaking, and we eventually made it up to the lunch stop, which turned out to be a stunning place for everyone to enjoy seeing so many 356s in one outstanding location.

Image

Image

It must have been difficult for the Dutch people we sat beside at lunch. We may be having problems, but they had come to Merano in a hired car. Their 356 broke down on the way, and they were stranded for 8 and a half hours waiting for rescue.

As you go on meeting people at these events your 356 world begins to grow - if you like it's one of the real benefits of coming on them if you get the chance.

Another story we heard of people travelling down here soon revealed just who was the driver of the Brit 356 we parked beside at the Porsche Museum.

Well known owner of Karmann Konnection Richard King and his wife Angie were actually travelling down in their two 356s, but the one parked beside us developed a knock in the engine and they wisely decided to stop driving it and it was waiting to be trailered back to the UK. They travelled, four of them, in a speedster! I took a picture of them with Trish after hearing Angie's version of events. If you know Angie, you'll know she's one of the really entertaining people on the 356 scene.

Image

After a brilliant lunch at the summit (the food at all the events was really good and reflected the excellent organisation of the whole affair) we made our way carefully back down the twisting passes. Time to get the engine sorted.

When we arrived back in Merano I called the Assistance number that all entrants to the 356 International could use in the event of mechanical problems with their cars.

The guy who answered said he was just finishing following the rally and he would come direct to the hotel car park in a couple of hours.

Now this may all sound like a corporate shout out for Porsche, but true to his word a big Cayenne arrived, with two guys on board, Alisio and Klaus.

Image

Image

It turns out Alisio is Training Manager for Porsche Italy, and Klaus was something equally exalted, but they are doing this because they are passionate about the old Porsches.

Image

They quickly and efficiently set about diagnosing the problem, finding fouled plugs, a loose distributor and a frayed fan belt to boot. They replace the lot, and test the engine and adjust tick over. With the return journey to England coming soon, this is a relief, no matter what the charge was going to be. They say it will need the carbs balancing when we get back, but this should be good to get us home.

Gingerly I ask how much I owe them. There is no charge for the labour or call out, says Alisio. All that is needed is to pay for the spare parts! He consults his list and says it will be 32 euros. I gave him 40 and said have a drink on us, which they politely declined until they saw we'd refuse to take no for an answer.

Image

It made our day. In fact it pretty much made our event.

The next day, Saturday, was the final day. The beautiful old town would see its biggest parade of 356s ever with the very best 20 being judged in full concours. We're not really into the manic polishing bit, but we buffed up the little car for showing to the townspeople as they promenaded by the river later that afternoon.

Image

Giving the car and the driving a break before the big trip home Trish and I joined the party going to The Gardens of Trautmansdorff, a sort of very well designed Eden Project, but without the biomes, and with better weather.

Image

Mid afternoon saw each car driving through a normally closed historic, cobbled, now-pedestrian street to collect a gift,  a lovely car rug, and drive slowly past all the cafes. We don't know why, but the people of  Merano applauded our little 356 while pretty much ignoring the one in front. Because we were English? Because we're graphite metallic? Whatever, it was wonderful.

Image

We then parked by the river promenade in our allotted bay, and joined everyone else in wandering along admiring all the cars.

More free booze and strudel prepped us for the big gala do in the evening where we re-met the many friends we'd already made, and applauded the concours winners.

No doubt about it, the Italians had put on a great event, a very memorable one.

That night, at 2 o'clock in the morning I woke up to find the bed shaking. A 5.9 on the richter scale quake was hitting Bologna, causing significant damage and tragedy, really not that far away. It brought us back to reality (but not Trish, who slept through it).

Time to hit the road home. Was the car really cured?

We're now back from the 356 International meeting held in the stunning Italian Dolomites of Sud Tyrol. Our 356A ran increasingly better on the way home. The jury is out on what exactly had been causing the engine to misfire at low revs, but it may be that the ethanol additive in many motorway fuels was having a negative effect. We tried to seek out garages supplying petrol without ethanol on the way back and things improved. Maybe not conclusive, but interesting.

Most of the pics I posted before were from the iPhone. I've now downloaded the others we took, and I thought it would be good to post ones from our Canon 60D.

The locations chosen by the Italian organisers were wonderful. The first set come from the journey, and final arrival at the Passo delle Erbe, Wurzjoch 6000 ft above sea level, and it results in what must be one of the largest collections ever of European 356's.

The second set are from the final parade and concours in Merano. We were each asked to drive down a narrow cobbled street that is normally closed to traffic. Here we were given a gift, a very soft travel rug. The first picture is us receiving our rug. I think it sums up the warmth and thoughtfulness of the whole meeting. Well planned, constantly interesting, and always celebrating and exploiting the wonderful capabilities and potential of the 356, in all it's forms.

The final set are just a few of those cars selected for the main concours competition.

This is such a great shot, Jeremy; a 356 owner of the future for sure.

Jeremy,

Great pictures shows how alive the 356 scene is in Europe. I liked the Meissen blue A photo a lot 8)

Pleased you made it back okay. Only a small chance but is your coil very old? I mean over 50 years old? I had similar experiences to you in the end bought as new coil actually from Roger Bray. Never had any problems since the day I fitted that a year or so ago.

I believe the windings were failing on my old coil it leads you to looking at all the other factors before finally coming to the conclusion about the coil.

Thanks for all your appreciative comments. Trish and I considered it a privilege to be able to attend, and we wanted to give everyone a flavour of what's going on.

The next International is being put on by the French in Strasbourg on 9th to the 12th of May in 2013. The year after is, I think, Portugal.

And thanks Roy for all your tech suggestions. Roger Bray is no doubt going to give the car a good check out pretty soon, with me watching over his shoulder in an attempt to learn at least a few more of the basics.

The next big trip we're planning in the 356 is to Angouleme to take part in the rally, and to watch the circuit racing around the city. It clashes with the Goodwood Revival, but if you haven't been yet it's a must.

Jeremy, thanks for taking the time to post about your trip, the Dolomites is a truely stunning part of the world.

I wish I knew this show was going to be so big as I would have made the effort to drive up for a look.

Just for accuracy, the quake was a 6.0 and was at 4.00am, I only live 30 miles from the epicentre. Was quite a weird experience being woken up from my slumber by the house moving about.

Thanks for pointing that out Captain. I hope that you escaped the worst of the damage.

Next year maybe you can get to the Strasbourg event. Mind you it will have to be good to match the Italian performance this year!
