Jaffa- 1978 SC/3.2 hotrod

Post by anglophone1 »

When my 1974 2.7 Carrera was stolen in June 2014 I nearly gave up- however with encouragement from people here on DDK, Porsche Club Ireland and my fabbo wife I took control and started to look around in September 2014.

Had several ideas- my insurer had give me a reasonable payout but not really enough to replace the 2.7 [agreed value is definitely the way to go].
I had decided that I was a bit fed up with the orignality/invesment cars that were around, whenever I saw a bunch of 911s I was gravitating to the ones that looked and seemed a bit "different" - met Magnus Walker at the Goodwood Revival- and decided to go the hotrod/outlaw route and have something really personal.

I'd been trawling Pelican and spotted what looked like the ideal base- a 1978 911SC , that had been modified for track day use , lots of suspension work and a tranplanted 1984 3.2 motor, best of all it looked funky in mocha brown with RAL orange mirrors wheels and rear deck.
Evan better she seemed like a good deal!

A few emails, some phone calls with the owner who sounded genuine - and I wired a pile of USD to Omaha, Nebraska [which bounced back twice!] and became the owner of Jaffa [thanks Chris Jury for the name- obvious really!]

Alan Shores and Kingstown Shipping did their bit and Jaffa arrived in Southampton late November.
I managed to get a brief look at her between business trips at the Southampton warehouse, and drive round the car park before I left again - Jaffa was then shipped to Jon Miller at Classic Carreras in Killaloe Ireland, who is going to make her road legal etc.

Here she is in Jon's workshop yesterday

The 3.2 motor looks and sounds great through an M&K two in and out exhaust and SSIs

The previous owner had also done some cool other mods, shifting battery to smugglers box and installing cutoff switch and strut brace:

As well as installing two large oil coolers in the front fenders with cooling ducts replacing front foglights on both sides

The interior is where work is needed as its's been stripped for racing

DDKs Chris Jury is kindly working on the graphics, here's his ideas sheet!

So far I'm well pleased- we'll keep you posted!

'Hot Rods' are a lot of fun and far more relaxed I imagine than a valuable car like the one you 'lost'.

Look forward to the final car and any 'signatures' you have in mind.

I need new headlights as they are LHD, playing around with the idea of a DZug HID conversion [won't cost much more than a new pair of Bosch/Porsche RHD light] - should be super bright and lool a little singer-esque.
BrewsterBear here on DDK has fitted a pair successfully to his SC

Anyone else done this- any opinions?

Clive, I'd be interested in your US spec H4 headlights. I'm at john.jeffries@nissan-usa.com. Cheers, John in Tolland, Connecticut, USA.
