3.2 Carrera Hotrod Backdate Frenzy
Well, my car has finally gone off to Early911 to do all the difficult bits that were beyond my abilities. So...time to start the resto thread.
I bought the in Sep 2012 from an ex-Harrier pilot. I gather flying a Harrier involves yanking a vectored thrust lever quite hard, which probably explains why this snapped as I drove the car home:
Had to limp home to London using only 3rd and 5th gears. The guy in the Porsche East London parts dept said he'd never heard of one of these snapping. Car is off the road for a week while I replace the rod and all the bushes.

Here it is:
Also noticed a noise from the front. Seems the oil cooler wasn't bolted on:

Decided to tackle the interior first. Re-trimming the panels myself:
Used guitar amplifier handles for the pull straps, and Ford Cortina basketweave just to annoy the pedants:
Found a great trimshop in Penge who did my seats:

Found this under the seat:
Had to 'fess up to the insurers and now had to change policy. It's got an RS232 socket so I've bought a serial-usb adapter so I can set the ECU up on my laptop.

I've been accumulating trim bits from e-bay and various other sources. Time to send them off to Early911 for stripping and bright anodising. Door handles going to London Chroming on the Old Kent Road (see http://vimeo.com/16947597)
Decklid grille from ebay.de turns out to be painted with fairly thin paint. Goes to I Cleenz Macheenz for pressure washing:

Got a set of pop-out windows. Plan to backdate the car to take them, but first they need to go to Early911 for a full re-furb and bright anodising:

Backdating the rear qtr windows:
Got a bit too enthusiastic with the spot-weld drill in one or two places so will have to get a few bits welded up when the car goes in for serious work at Early911.

Stop there.
Well, maybe take out some ride height, but otherwise it looks spot on.
Backdating is so 2007.

I'd be tempted to agree. Maybe lose the big overriders.

Re: 3.2 Carrera Hotrod Backdate Frenzy
That was early summer. Lots more been done since then. I did think about an SC RS look, but the front of an IB car just doesn't look right to me, and it looks even fuglier with grp bumper (IROC, RUF, you name it). All my opinion, and I understand a lot of people disagree. It's my car though, so backdate it is. I could never afford another early 911, faking it is the only way. I tried to do as much as I could myself until this week (more pics to come) but now it's over at Nick Moss's place for surgery.
