Mongrel Street Racer
Some things are just meant to be…………..
A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to find a nice F series 2.4E ( http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewto ... 28&t=35606 ) and planned to turn it into something like this…..
...or this…
…or this...
…or this…
…or even this ...
However the car turned out to be a very nice matching numbers vehicle with a wonderful original specification
So nice in fact, that original standard specification it deserved to be - this then became the blue print for my restoration.
It didn't stop me lusting for something a bit different though ….

Well, I've learnt that if you want something and REALLY want it, then opportunities seem to come your way…..
….even if you're not REALLY looking…..
…as I mentioned elsewhere, oops I did it again….http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewto ... =2&t=38590...

Re: Mongrel Street Racer
Blooming heck Darren this is mean't to be a "maverick" forum . Follow your heart and build that "mongrel" Sad to say I really prefer the rods with dodgy panel gaps and no provenance to all the garage and concours queens that are around and those cars illustrated are far from mongrels. There's room for both so as long as building a dream doesn't sacrifice some piece of supposed history so go for it.........I would say that with a matching numbers 1975 911S ( must be worth something to someone one day) masquerading as an r car in the garage though,

Re: Mongrel Street Racer
So having been fortunate to find my second early 911, and a bit of a mongrel at that, it's a question of what to do with it?
It's become apparent to me that if you're taking a car back to original specification, or building a replica be it RS, RSR, or ST then you have a formula and a set of plans to work with…..
...Mike's Martini Prototype is more authentic and original than the original and there's many fine specialists out there that are building beautiful perfect recreations….
….but what do you do when faced with countless possibilities, especially if you don't have the creative juices of a Mr Seume or Mr jury, or indeed the period perfect knowledge of Mr Boyle? ….

You're so mid 80s, plenty were updated back then. After all, who'd want an obsolete model...?Bootsy wrote: Easy, forward date it and build a Stock SC look Pre 73

Re: Mongrel Street Racer
Well I've decided I need a set of guiding principles to keep me honest and to (try to) stop me making a mess of things...
…so this is my scenario…
Meet 70's man…
…the year is 1978 - Forty something(?) 70's man is going through his mid-life crisis and fed up with his Ford Cortina he decides to buy himself a Sports Car!
Although an admirer of British classics he prefers things a little different and maverick. He loves Porsche's racing heritage and their giant killing past and decides that a Porsche 911 it has to be.
He longs for a 2.7RS although these are beyond his budget and eventually finds himself a 1972 E series 2.4T Sporto with a duff gearbox….
…he quickly tracks down a 2.2S engine and 915 gearbox and sets out to build himself a '911 Street Racer' or 'DT Special' as I'm calling it (my initials )…...

Re: Mongrel Street Racer
You build the car you want..............whats not to like
Perfect approach.
In 1989 I assembled my 73T with some mods and hillclimbed the road car for 15 years.
It ended up with a 3.2 in it and a few other mods and is now seen as a hotrod.
It has always been the car i wanted, awkward panel gaps and lacking a few bits along the way.
Looks stock but with a good 220 bhp and killer suspension and heart stopping brakes...
Just the best fun outside of a real Street Rod.
Make it different!

Re: Mongrel Street Racer
1978 - an age before Replica's, Recreations, Homages, Tributes or indeed a Pastiche? - although maybe the odd RS 'copy'….
…..a 'Hot Rod' is something you do to a Model T Ford or similar American muscle….
…and as for 'Sports Purpose'...well isn't that what all 911's are?
This 911 will have no pretensions, it's not trying to be anything or adhere to a set criteria whilst any part or process available up to 1978 is in.
However 70's man is a purist and inspiration will come from all the great cars that came before it, RS's ST's RSR's and especially the R.
Initial build criteria is a lightweight road going street racer that's also eligible for the 1978 PCGB Pirelli Race Series with the following aimed for specification…
Standard narrow body (may opt for RS flares at a later date)
As lightweight as possible with an aim of below 1000KG
2.2 engine rebuilt to 2.5 litres with twin spark ignition and circa 250BHP (edit: 230 was way too conservative)
Light weight sports interior with half roll cage
Plexiglass side and rear windows
Upgraded, possibly Turbo, braking system,
and anything else that seems like a good idea, along with….
…Blood Orange, sorry to be predictable but I've always longed for Blood Orange
It's early days so any ideas or suggestions are most welcome
BTW - please excuse my indulgence, this is all very tongue in cheek and the aim with this build is to have a bit of fun!
