1990 964 C4...£35k

Post by Burma-Shave »

My old friend is for sale. First thing is that the car is located near Dundee, an hour north of Edinburgh, and has no MOT because of a fail on steering rack.

The car is Slate Grey Metallic UK car, 1989 reg, 1990 MY, has 137k miles, non sunroof, and is generally in really nice condition. It has had the mandatory 964 bodywork done with the rust properly fixed - front and rear glass out, rust cut out and new metal let in, new OS front and rear wings, nearside wing repaired with new metal. That was 7 or 8 years ago at least, and there is no sign of it coming back - its common as you'll know for these cars to have the typical rust under the seals or in rear quarters filled and blown over for sale, and it comes right back. There is a spiderweb crack on the rear PU and a scuff on the front wing that will likely polish out.

It has a linen leather/black interior in great condition apart from the usual wear on the drivers side right hand bolster needing doing. I have a pole position in it at the moment which I might keep or sell separately. Dials are all good with no peeling. Electrics all work fine.

It has Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs with FVD lowering collars at the front, a 21mm rear ARB, Wevo engine mounts - and so like any 964 with decent suspension drives really really well. Its pretty low and nicely stanced - but not too low.

It has cat and 2ry silencer bypass, and so sounds epic to my ears but can be changed of course. I wasnt bothered sorting the aircon so took out the compressor. It has 993 ignition coils. Rear wiper motor delete and watertight aluminium blank for the hole. The rear reflector and lights are original and faded - I did the Rennlist red film trick which improved them enough for me. 993 mirrors. It has the clear indicators that I would have put back to orange, presuming I can find them. All original parts, flag mirrors, space saver, jack, compressor, gloves, will come with it if you want them.

This 964 'benefits' from never had significant engine work, its had a clutch once I think with a PO, and thats it. Like bodywork, what is advertised as a rebuild might well prove to be shonky, and start leaking again, or worse. So as you would expect from a 964 it has always leaked oil, since I owned it, bless, but it is leaking a fair bit now - particularly out of a valve cover (even though I replaced the covers with billet ones). I have booked it in twice for a top end/oil leak fix, and cancelled it twice because I bought another Porsche each time. Poor car..

So it needs the usual engine out job to do the other leaks and check top end etc., and my plan would of course to have done plug leads, clutch, clean up its grubby underside etc. whilst in there. There is no reason to suggest top or bottom end issues, it was driving great when in use, no exhaust smoke or funny noises. I bought a set of the black fiberglass tinware from Roger Harradine and have fitted the side sections over the valve covers but the main center part still needs fitting when the motor is out - it'll come with the car.

I was enjoying using the car - putting up with a bit of smoke thru the grille when stopped at traffic lights, and I even did a hillclimb in it 2016 - but it failed an MOT on play in a steering arm and was parked after that. They werent happy with the valve cover leak either. It drives fine, there's no obvious play in the steering - I think I just found an overattentive tester. Its on the fail sheet now though so would need the steering rack out and a refurbed exchange unit to be MOT'd (about 250 quid exchange when I looked).

The car was always serviced and hugely loved up until that point, but after the MOT failure I was so busy so it has been dry stored and just taken occasionally around the local roads to keep it happy. Since then I have had the crusty SC and 928 keeping me busy. And now my wife has left, it definitely needs sold, basically so I can afford to stay living in my house.

The last time I drove the car the brakes were starting to bind - I guess the caliper slides lifting, and might improve after a few heat cycles - but I would probably factor in a caliper refurb as they have never been done. Wheels wise, it is currently on boxster twist 17 inch wheels and old tyres to avoid ruining its tyres with it standing, I am actually using its refurbed D90s on the 928 so want to keep them!, but D90s are still easy to get hold of. I could be persuaded to let the original wheels go with it I guess.

Its got a Becker traffic pro and a brand new immobiliser fob from the manufacturers Hamilton and Palmer, plus the second key and red master fob. You need to lock it/immobilise on the key (if you lock with the fob the alarm comes on after a while - but its only the hazards flashing after I took out the siren!) It unlocks fine on the remote fob. Its easy to work around.

I have a big file of service history and full list of previous owners. I have owned the car for 17 years. Jesus.

Looking at PH (at the time of writing) there are only 2 other C4 coupes up for sale in the UK, a 118k mile car with no engine rebuild at £57k, 195k miler with engine rebuild in Ireland (rebuilder unknown) at £44K.
There's also an LHD 81k miler at £55k. In Monaco. And that seems to be it.

I am wanting £35k ovno. Priced taking into account cost of work needed of course. I expect if I did the steering rack and MOT'd it I could ask more, I just dont have the brain space just now and could do with moving it on.

So if you want a 964 with an engine rebuild bespoke to your needs and that you can trust (i.e. one you manage yourself) for around the same overall cost as buying a car someone else got rebuilt..this might be the car for you.
