Oops I did it again!

Post by Darren65 »

A happy tale :) .......

A few weeks ago the parts guy at OPC Swindon gave me the number for a guy who was looking to sell what was believed to be an early 911 - at the time I wished they hadn't due to a lack of time and a major shortage of 'fun funds'.

I was slow to follow this up but kept thinking 'what if' so eventually called and was told the story of a 1972 T that had sat in a lock-up unused since 1989 - we agreed to meet after the Easter break and I finally went to view today.

The chap turned out to be a real character and serial collector of early Fords (REALLY serious kit), he's developing his lock-ups and needed the space, has no love of Porsche so just wanted rid......

Image

The car is indeed a 1972 T needing complete renovation with quite a few bits missing and a non original engine which I originally thought was a later SC block - I decided to buy but only if the price was right - although the chap had been offered more elsewhere, my offer of immediate funds and collection swung things in my favour  - another project!!!!

I decided to give Nick Fulljames a call to see what could be done with the engine, from the details provided he thought it was a 2.2 S and suggested I send a couple of pictures - a quick text (don't you love today's technology) and he immediately confirmed the engine as an early 2.2 S. It turned out I'd read the data book incorrectly - that was nice :)

Image

I ended up rushing around the West Country collecting funds, transport and trailer to collect the car.....

Image

Which is now in my garage ready for a proper inspection......

Image

A shortage of funds means this one may take some time and then there is the issue that the wife has told me in no way can I keep three Porsche's (this will probably require more work than the car!) - the other answer might be selling the 993

Whereas I want my 2.4E to be as original and as perfect as possible with this car I can have a bit of fun - with a 2.2 S engine and a 1972 T shell I'm thinking ST Rep/Hot-Rod - what d'ya reckon?

Cheers,

Nice score Darren !

Regarding its eventual spec - I'd suggest you just build a 'period' hotrod rather than go down the 'ST' route - gives you much more flexibility & makes it more personal/individual.

I think you're right Andy - although what would be your list of period 'desirable wants/must haves'?

nice project

if it was me, I'd be converting it to LHD ;) ..

Ignoring that suggestion ;) , I'd restore the body back to near stock, with an S front spoiler, flat rear deck but add some genuine RS rear flares ( so it looks like a flared S ) , painted in a period safety colour .

upgrade the suspension for fast road use ( as opposed to a too stiff track set up )

engine wise ... difficult one, but I'd have thought selling on the 2.2S engine ( should be a good market for that) & building up a high compression 2.7 MFI'd motor

Interior, sports purpose

All that would make a nice 'period' hot rod early 911

Stock narrow body (those '72s are a bit special), stock nose & tail, low, lwt inside, colour with attitude and stripe it. Keep the engine :)

Nice find.

Cheers Guys,

All solid suggestions, would love some more :)

Nick did say he could get 240 BHP from the engine by adding a few bits & bobs, actually he didn't say bits & bobs but I couldn't understand a word of what he was saying although I did catch the headline figure!

That and aiming to keep things under a 1000KG should be fun 8)

240 bhp ( dyno'd) from a 2.2 will be a bit of a screamer and I imagine pretty un friendly on the road
