Sitting with Chris Turner

Apologies if this is already going on somewhere else, Chris and I couldn't find the topic anywhere...

Chris Turner is in a hospice, he is quite unwell and is unlikely to return to work again... I think he'd love to hear from you all...

His daughter said she'd love it if the community could post stories and pics of Chris and his association with the Porsche world... I'm sure many of us have them. Unfortunately Chris is too ill to respond but I know his family will be showing him this thread, thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

I didn't know Chris was poorly and was starting to wonder why the workshop phone isn't being answered.

Edit: I've just been told just how poorly Chris is.

If you can read this Chris I wish you and those near you strength.

Chris may be laid up right now, but his work still keeps so many of our cars ticking over.

I always read with interest fellow DDK'ers who take their cars to a rolling road for tune up and to be honest, I have considered it myself. However, about 12 years ago, at a Porsche London region meeting at The Dysart in Richmond, which in those days was dominated by the early Porsche register, on a sunny evening, I was chatting to Chris over a pint and mentioned that my car wasn't running as well as I felt it could. We were in the car park at the time, looking over all the cars there and Chris suggested I pop the engine lid and start the car....with pint still in hand, he proceeded to adjust my carbs. It would be another 12 years before those carbs were touched again, when recently they were rebuilt....but in that time, I have done several Classic Le Mans trips, been down to the factory in Stuttgart, done C2C, track days, etc and the car has run beautifully ever since. On a sunny bank holiday Saturday afternoon many years ago I broke down on a country lane in Oxfordshire. I checked what I could and figured that fuel was not getting though. At a loss as to what to do I phoned Chris who talked me through various tests and eventually suggested that I locate and bash the fuel pump. I did and hey presto it started but stopped again soon after.
After more talking to Chris I arranged for the RAC to pick the car up and deliver it to Chris at his workshop in North London.
Chris then drove across London to his workshop which was probably a hour away to open it up and take delivery of my car. By this time it was dark and pissing down with rain. Chris then drove me home.
On the Monday Chris phoned me and told me that he had sourced and fitted another pump and that I could pick the car up.

My clutch cable broke at classic le mans a few years ago and again I was on the phone to Chris who talked me through replacing it.

Chris has replaced and fixed things all over my car over the last 10 or 11 years. He is always a pleasure to be with and it is often hard to get him to take payment for work he has done.

So thank you Chris for being a good friend and a great mechanic.

You'll hear similar stories to Jason's & Peter's from many early 911 (& 356/912) owners.

There aren't many (any ?) other Porsche specialists who have given up their time so freely - as well as passing on their knowledge via the forum & organising regular events (the monthly Fairmile meets & the DDK Christmas meal at the Orange Tree).

As has already been said Chris is one of the good guys. From those early days at the Dysart through the Orangetree and the Fairmile Chris kept everyone together in this DDK family.
