Have you rectified the charging issue Neil or were you lucky and just managed to keep car running without using much battery power?

This reminds me of our journey to clm 2008, dynamo stopped charging on the way down to catch the ferry! Turned out to be the insulation on the end of the shaft (behind the pulley wheel) that had destroyed itself, resulting in zero volts across the dynamo. Worth popping the pulley wheel off to inspec...
