Re: 911T - any thoughts on engine noises. Main bearing?

I can hear a knock (barely) when you move to the left side. Might be low pitch sound and mostly rolled off due to microphone range. If much clearer/ louder in person, it might be rod knock. Use a mechanics stethoscope, or a long screwdriver at your ear, to hear it better. Just don’t get it caught i...

Re: What do you make of backdated Porsches?

It can all be undone and made a nice 3.2 again, costs but the bits that come off are worth some money too. The 3.2 must be one of the most boring of the flat 6 engine, no cam effect and no pops and farts, but, turbine smooth and constant pull in tall gears, will run on anything and dare I say 30 mp...

What's the deal with 1970 seatbelt mounts?

My 1970T has two makeshift bolts through the rusty floor and not reinforced, directly behind the seat, with a lap belt attached. I doubt this would restrain my lockdown belly in the event of even a minor collision. There's an unused bolt in the top of the B-pillar where i can mount a coathanger type...

Re: 911T - any thoughts on engine noises. Main bearing?

Sounds pretty normal to me too. Those Webers probably need setting up. Sounds like they're spitting back which suggests some throats are running a bit lean on idle circuit. 911 bottom end is very robust so unless abused doesn't normally give trouble. Can help with setup. Give me a shout if you're s...

911T - any thoughts on engine noises. Main bearing?

First real start and run of my newly acquired 2.2 911T - here's a video (click the speaker to unmute). I took this within about 1 minute of a cold start. It's been running within a couple of months and has new oil, leads and plugs. https://photos.app.goo.gl/bmEra73MHUFi2pjt8 Any thoughts or comments...

Re: What do you make of backdated Porsches?

Backdating is an important source of revenue for Porsche specialists, forward-dating having become deeply unfashionable https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CFRPxB7WIAALy2Q.jpg:large  Ironically my 1970T has been forward dated with a whale tail, large rear reflector and recaro bucket seats. It wears th...

Re: What do you make of backdated Porsches?

. I don't have any problem with 'back-dated'/modified cars - but I don't agree with this statement: ".. early models combined with superior later mechanicals" [/i] From a driving point of view I rate the earlier, higher-revving, smaller capacity engines equipped with mfi or carbs as far s...

Re: What do you make of backdated Porsches?

I agree the 3.2 is a bit squishy and flat compared to an MFi car but you get better brakes, more refinement, more power, more torque, better economy and much better round-town manners so there’s plenty to be said for a backdate when you’re doing normal driving or a long trip. It also remains much e...

Re: 3.2 Carrera UK emissions fail

I'd be looking at the Cylinder head temp sender, if the ECU is getting false readings it could be thinking its in permanent warm up mode and be running rich. Certainly change all service items if unknown history. The idle control valve just stabilisers the idle when off throttle and isn't adjustabl...

Re: What do you make of backdated Porsches?

I'm with Andy, the engine is where the magic happens and the main reason I bought an early 911. I don't have any issues with back dates at all though, some great cars out there and can be had for a price point that may not get you a good early car. There are also very expensive backdates that have ...

What do you make of backdated Porsches?

I just imported from Jersey a stunning, black Carrera 3.2 G50 that was backdated by Paul Stevens of AutoArt a good while back in the style of a "lightweight R lookalike", and which featured in 911 & Porsche World some time ago. There is no doubting that it is a stunning car and thrilli...

Re: Are there any classic 911 breakers in the midlands?

Hi Rob Engine lids and accompanying grilles changed over the pre-74 years and Model Year 911’s often are misrepresented by the fact that they did not follow calendar years for production but from August to July. I have a few engine lids and if you are keen to get the ‘correct’ one for your 911 it’s...

Re: 2.7 pots and pistons NOS

Mahle 90mm pots and pistons CIS. Nikasil barrels all new ,boxed and unused. £1600. Change of plans. Can mail pictures if required. Nick Putting these in a 2.2 is a bad idea, right? Case can't take it, and drilling new stud holes in the pots leaves them weakened. Doing a compression test in the comi...
