Is the fuel pump still running whilst cranking?
Can hear it ignition on, but not when the starter is going.

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod
Sorry if I missed this further up the thread but basic questions sometimes are the best.
1. Is there fuel in the tank?
2. Is the fuel pump running?
3. Is power getting to the ECU?

Re: Assessing an unknown engine
There’s no (visible) scoring on the bores from that damage?
Difficult to see from the photos, but is the top of the piston clean or is it some deposit build ups that then look like damage?

The clicky bit might still work but a pin (male or female side) can be out of place. Can you get to it and have a look inside both halves?

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod
Maybe a pin backed out when the connector was stressed? Or maybe it broke a wire inside?

Re: Assessing an unknown engine
Diesel has been known to loosen things off?
That and (maybe not at the same time!) heat around the edge of the piston whilst gently tapping it with the handle of a heavy hammer.
