Re: Alloy wheel nuts - lube or not?

This topic just keeps on coming up and it is reasonably important. The Workshop Manual states to following https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/LFoYZC.jpg There are several alternatives to moly greases now and some of the ceramic compounds work just as well and cause much less mess. There wil...

Re: Driveshaft came adrift

The CV to Flange Joint should really be a metal to metal contact as this will ensure the that the CV pulls up 'square to the flange. Even of you have a CV with the correct gasket recess the gasket should crush and allow a metal to metal contact to transmit the drive. It is a common practice to elimi...

Re: Strut Brace

Strut braces do offer some benefits but only in cars that have high levels of grip and that are driven hard. The RSR style with fixed ends are the most appropriate design as the rose joint now commonly used still allow a degree of freedom and allow some movement of the towers. The rose jointed desig...

Re: Zenith carburettor

Setting the idle and balancing Zeniths is no more difficult than a Weber 40IDA3C and in some respects the Zenith can perform very well indeed and can superior to a Weber. Setting idle is relatively straightforward but it does help to check CO levels, The car will idle quite well at relatively low CO...

Re: Zenith carburettor

The vacuum enrichment system on the Zenith Carbs works in conjunction with a speed transducer which allows the solenoid to open and deliver fuel when the engine speed transducer provides the correct signal. At engine speeds above 1350rpm the speed transducer activates the solenoid which in turn allo...

Re: Driveshaft came adrift

If they are 4 bolt flanges then they will be M10 bolts that fit into the 108mm OD CV Joint. The 108mm CV is available in 2 x different widths with the early 1969 being 40mm wide and the later 71MY being 32mm wide. The drive shaft length differs to suit the different joint widths and they use differe...

Re: wanted .. throttle pedal to keep as a spare

The Plastic SC Pedal and the Early pedal are subtly different in terms of the 'stop' position and don't interchange without some work.. The early pedal and the later plastic pedal don't interchange without some work. If you fit an SC Pedal to a car with carbs the stop built into the pedal doesn't al...

Re: The old question of oil quantity

The Coefficient of Volumetric Expansion for a typical engine oil is 0.00070 per degK. I think that the reason for checking oil levels with the engine running is really concerned with the configuration of the dry sump tank and the oil pump levels. Depending on the condition of the pump in terms of th...

Reap Automotive initially just printed new dials and sent the instrument to Speedy Cables for any repair.

I don't know if this is still the case.

Re: Sound deadenign under roof

There is normally a hessian backed foam pad stuck to the inner roof panel and it is around 12mm thick. The main reason for using a pad of this type is to prevent the headliner rods from rotating during driving. When you fix the pad I would try to find a high temperature glue so it stays fixed in hot...

Re: Running rich issue

One way to set the idle mixture is to measure the CO and there is a value printed on the sticker on the fan strap.

If you don't have a CO meter you can use the 'lean best' method.

Re: Con Rod Reconditioning

Tim, £250.00 per set including return shipping. Changing bolts is an interesting idea and seems to be an accepted practice but the current cost of geuine Porsche Rod Bolts seem to vary between £10 to £25 per bolt depending on engine type it can be quite costly. The early version of the Workshop Manu...

Steering Rack Rebuild Kits

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/dQTMRF.jpg We have spent a little time developing a relatively comprehensive repair kit for all of the racks fitted to early 911s. The most difficult problem to solve concerned the rack support bushes which comprised of a steel backed bi-metallic bush bon...

Con Rod Reconditioning

Con rods on 911s are now well beyond their initial design life and whilst failure is rare it does seem worthwhile to spend a little time reconditioning them to improve confidence in their condition. We start by checking that the rods are not bent or twisted and then re-size the big end. Small ends a...
