I asked re unburnt fuel partly in case the mfi timing is off. How about the plugs, what colour are they, and are they wet with unburnt fuel?
If it is fuel I can't be of much help as I don't knownthe mfi system well at all.

I wonder if the greater tappet space on number three exhaust valve indicates that it's not getting oiled as well as the others, or even that the valve was stuck when adjusted?

That's great advice, Graham. On the 3.2 they're Allen nuts which are also more easily accessible. But the standard 3.2 manifold also doesn't have the flange directly above.

I found a little piece of evidence on the engine cover... a fragment of smashed rear windscreen, I would imagine - suggesting the engine came from a car which was written off around 1983.
