Re: A Dream Fulfilled - MY 904FF

Some of you might have wondered what had happened to the "FF" over the last couple of years. It has obviously been hors de combat due to Jim's "off" at Shelsley Walsh in 2022. The good news is that an improved version - MK16B!!? will be at Shelsley this weekend and its more dila...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

ATM I'm fully expecting the cylinder 2 intake tappet to be half a centimetre too far open! Do you recall slacking any off more than you might have expected, when adjusting them?

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I realised I can cut the outer 30 degree and the inner 60 degree faces regardless of whether any valve guides will be replaced. Only the actual mating face grind, made with the valve itself, needs to be made in the final guide. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240527/9ee5e8ed72055d6cebcd554635fe42...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Five of the head gasket faces are good. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240527/14d2d1e8508b2d1d71dc9c8a3e87e5bb.jpg One has some pitting where it was corroded at the gasket, so I guess they all need a quarter mm off. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240527/654e2fb59acba4babb6b51c54c3b331f.jpg S...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I made a seat cutting tool for the 30 degree slope and picked a valve which was representative of the others. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240527/9f132084ad9ad9a821653687eb13769d.jpg In my garage sharpie serves for the blue stuff I've seen proper engineers use. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com...

Re: Can you guess what it is yet?

and WHO would have a 50mm drill in the garage!? When he retired from cabinet making, my granddad owned a hardware store. I was too young to remember it, but I think it was one of those places with ladders, no room to move, and shelves upon shelves, where you could find absolutely anything. I think ...

Re: Can you guess what it is yet?

Seems to fit. I'll know for sure once I start cutting.

Re: Can you guess what it is yet?

You can't really going to 3 angle your valve seats are you Rob? and WHO would have a 50mm drill in the garage!? Bingo Graham, three out of three. I don't need a fancy cutter as I'm only doing the job once, so grinding paste will be fine. I cut this edge to 30 degrees. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.c...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Aluminium expands more than steel when hot. You need to heat the head at least 60 degrees around the stud. Hot air gun works well if you are patient. Or stick them on the BBQ like Alan Millyard does. I wouldn’t even try cold. Heat is applied first. Funnily enough I had worked out the same thing. Bu...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Rob, Have you tried any of that FREEZE OFF penetrating oil at all? Normally works quite well, and for the price might be an idea before you weld your nuts together? There are others on the market, but Eurocarparts sells this stuff......... https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/normfest-super-crack-ultra-i...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I pulled this ancient protractor from the depths of my measuring/marking drawer. Upon spotting my name scruffily scratched into the surface, I reflected how I was just a boy when I etched it there with my compass. The compass was part of a set my dad got me for my birthday and one of my most treasur...

Here's where I eased off the corners. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240526/f41e1dfbfe23e79f76e7e97326d1bd97.jpg I seated a valve to confirm the contact area is bigger than spec. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240526/35448cfd3441f4601d3026d2ef2443e9.jpg The intake studs look great. https://u...
