Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I’ve used a similar massive crows foot in the past with success. Can’t remember about the tensioner, but I guess that’s the way. Do you have the Dempsey book? Invaluable for this stuff Yes, I have Dempsey. My fear was the square drive breaking off the crows foot or cracking... the reality is, the a...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I had to get the orange 911 out to turn it around at the weekend, providing the perfect opportunity to bring the engine in behind the car and get it onto a stand. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240418/8564cb56e23f6893ebd464556f026c74.jpg A mechanic friend of mine vouched for automatic transmissi...

Re: Maddening Running Issue

A new pump after 50 years is probably a good investment even if the old one still works. (Just trying to make you feel better about it)

Re: Good usable 90mm pistons & cylinders wanted

. The 2.7 litre 911 engines have a stroke of 70.4mm so if using the 90mm pistons with a 66mm stroke, the swept volume - & hence the compression ratio - will be (significantly) lower. For instance, if using std 2.7RS pistons with a 66mm crank you'll end up with (from memory) a CR of ~ 7:1 Thus t...

Re: Good usable 90mm pistons & cylinders wanted

. Do you realise that if fitting 90mm pistons you'll end up with quite a low compression ratio ? . No, I was expecting it to be higher. This is on a 66mm crank. Am I being daft (as usual)? Not sure where I can I see the rod length and pin height for the 2.2E vs a 2.7. I presume it depends which 90m...

Good usable 90mm pistons & cylinders wanted

I'm looking for a set of six good usable circa 90mm pistons and cylinders to drop into the 2.2E engine I have, in anticipation of the original Biral cylinders being corroded when I get into them. I understand widening the stud holes for the 2.2 studs can be hit and miss so I'm reluctant to buy new w...

Re: Maddening Running Issue

I asked re unburnt fuel partly in case the mfi timing is off. How about the plugs, what colour are they, and are they wet with unburnt fuel?

If it is fuel I can't be of much help as I don't knownthe mfi system well at all.

Re: Maddening Running Issue

That hunting is weird .. so that was at part throttle ? All 6 cylinders effected which does point to something pre the MFI pump if fuel related Thanks James. Yes, part, half, full, makes no odds. Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

I wonder if the greater tappet space on number three exhaust valve indicates that it's not getting oiled as well as the others, or even that the valve was stuck when adjusted?

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

That's great advice, Graham. On the 3.2 they're Allen nuts which are also more easily accessible. But the standard 3.2 manifold also doesn't have the flange directly above.

That did it. You have to leave it last and raise the manifold as the nut unscrews.

I don't think it'd fit. In the absence of a better plan, I'll take an angle grinder to a socket and cut it down.

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I found a little piece of evidence on the engine cover... a fragment of smashed rear windscreen, I would imagine - suggesting the engine came from a car which was written off around 1983. I guess that tallies up with the broken rear engine mount, maybe it was rear-ended. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Ok this MFI throttle nut on cylinder 1 is absurd. Please illuminate me on how it gets removed.
