Re: 12 plug distributor without advance control?

Agree with Mike. Most cars seem to be almost fully advanced by 3krpm. Also, alot of competition engines run fixed advance. This certainly the case with my Lotus 22 which has the Lucas distributor centrifugal mech disabled. Idea being that you simply set it with fixed 30deg advance.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Hi Graham, Really enjoyed meeting up yesterday despite the disappointment of not making much progress. Thanks to Mrs 911hillclimber too for keeping us fed :). At least we verified clean waveforms from the VR speed sensor all the way to the XDI input connector. We also proved that supply voltage dip ...

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Sounds good. You should see voltage fluctuations from the sensor using a multimeter, just by moving something ferrous near the sensor face.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Well done Graham. The relays would just be to take current off the ignition switch, or toggle switch in your case. Shouldn't be an issue provided the switch can handle the current and the voltage drop across the switch (when carrying current) isn't excessive. I noticed that the XDI manual requires t...

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Hi Graham, I downloaded the XDI Manual Version 1.7, 2015 from Electromotive, and had a slow read through it. You've probably seen these many times already (apologies in advance) but here are a few points I noted for double checking .... Page 9, 8-dip switch settings for 6 cyl dual plug should be; UP...

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Think I'd capture a plot of the supply voltage directly across the ecu while cranking the motor. Need to make sure it remains within ecu limits.

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Well done, admire your tenacity. Hope you see better results with the new layout. Wolverhampton not too far so if problems persist can throw some test kit and screening materials in the car and drive over. Good luck!

Re: 8000 rpm/300 bhp 3.2 rebuild

Some great advice already from fellow DDK'ers. Here are my thoughts .... 1. Individually check operation of sensors by a process of elimination 2. Don't rip everything apart because it won't necessarily reveal the issue 3. Check power feeds to make sure supply transient dips aren't causing an issue ...

Re: Just a thought, opinions welcome

Can't comment on what the power fall with one plug might be, but intrigued as to why you can't get the twin plug setup working. Shout if you want any help - I've been designing electronic systems for about 30 years.

Re: Can anyone recommend a digital multimeter

Example of crankshaft rpm to ignition frequency conversion ... At 1000rpm, divide by 60 for revs per second, giving 16.666rps Six cylinder, four stroke gives 6/2 = 3 ignition pulses per revolution So at 1000rpm we see ignition pulses at 3 x 16.666 = 50Hz Relationship between rpm and ignition pulse f...

Re: Can anyone recommend a digital multimeter

Hi,
Fluke are the benchmark and a Fluke 87v is very good and accurate meter, but probably over kill for what you need. Asian manufacturer Uni-T are a good alternative and a site cheaper. Something like a UT139C or UT61E would serve you well.
Cheers

Re: When something falls off

Mine was on an early mini cooper, my first car. I'd spotted it abandoned on someone's front drive, struck a deal and got it pulled home. With help from my dad, got it road worthy and dropped a 1275cc engine in it (twin su's, lcb manifold, high compression, ...). Could spin the wheels in first and se...
